excellent citizens for society. My mother changed her attitude about having a tattoo after the conversation; she no longer thought it was bad, but she still objected if I had one on my body.

  1. Explain the differences between facts and opinions.
  • Facts: is statements that can be proven true or false. For example, the Sun rises in the East.
  • Opinions: is an expression of a person’s feelings that cannot be proven. For example, Western food is not as delicious as Vietnam’s food. Facts Opinions Statements can be proven true or false Shown with unbiased words Observation or research Objective reality Expression of a person’s feelings that can not be proven Expressed with biased words Assumption or personal view Subjective reality
  1. List three strategies for communicating with people for whom English is not their first language
  • Be slow down my speech. Speaking at a slower rate will help anyone less familiar with the language.
  • Having some fundamental knowledge of a new culture to interact with others appropriately.
  • Use nonverbal communication and body language to improve understanding and maintain a productive conversation.
  1. Identify three privileges that you have experienced because of your gender, age, and religious beliefs.
  • Gender:
    • When I was studying at school, I and all of the girls in my class did not need to carry any heavy things such as a water bottle, or from the 1st floor to my classroom on the 3rd floor.
    • On Woman Day (8/3) I was given some presents or flowers from boys in my class.
    • All of the boys prioritized me as well as girls in my class in every way such as expressing opinions, answering the questions first.
  • Age:
    • When I was a child, my elder brother usually gave me toys to play with first.
    • When I made mistakes, I would always be forgiven by my family because I was the youngest child.
    • In my family, I’ve hardly been worried about lacking money because my parents and my brother will give it to me.
  • Religious belief:
    • I can travel to any part of my country and know that my religion will be accepted. All religious spaces to pray are respected and safe.
    • Whenever I believe sincerely in the Gods, I’ll be respected by everyone.
    • In high school, everyone is treated equally with religious or non-religious students. Portfolio Reflection Guidance Provide 120 to 150 words of reflection on your learning from any two (2) portfolio questions. You may reflect by connecting what you learnt from these questions to prior knowledge, past experiences, or recent perceptions/assumptions. Use the following as guidance. After studying lessons about perception and cultural diversity, I have achieved a lot of valuable knowledge. I realized that people have their perceptions due to their prior experiences, knowledge, psychological states, and the difference between facts and opinions. Perception can happen if people have biases or stereotypes when judging issues. During the lessons, the knowledge from the textbook and some real examples from the lectures support me in remembering the theoretical kinds of perception models and cultural diversity. The difference between cultures in many countries may cause misunderstanding, but people should learn how to get on well with others to build a strong relationship. Moreover, we can’t judge people by their appearance, for example, people have a tattoo on their body, dye hair into bright colors so we think they’re bad guys. In the future, I will be more discrete when judging others, spending more time to understand them thoroughly.
