Practical #1: Biosafety Skills Learning Targets □ Safety equipment in the laboratory Equipment Location When Used How Used Eyewash station Second sink in the lab For chemical splashes to eye Pull down lever to activate, flush eyes with water for 10 mins, then seek medical attention. First aid kit Behind eyewash station Minor cuts or burns Bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, burn relief gel available as needed. Fire Blanket Next to first aid kit Used to extinguish small fires (ex. Papers on bench on fire) Eliminate fuel sources & put over flames to eliminate oxygen from fire. Spill Kit Next to first aid kit & fire blanket Cleaning up chemical or biological spills Use absorbent powder or neoprene gloves for chemical spills and Virex for biological ones. Safety Shower Left and right in hallway outside lab Rinsing large chemical spills from your skin (only used if REALLY needed)

PPE Location Rules for Use Donning/Doffing Procedures Gloves First aid kit station Used when working with biohazards (living microbes) OR chemicals Donning: Hands should be dry. Handle gloves by cuff. Inspect for tears. Doffing: Remove without
touching outer surface of gloves. Wash hands after removing. Face masks Entrance of the lab Used to protect yourself and others from inhaled/exhaled aerosols. Make sure it fits well and covers both nose and mouth.
Lab coats Bring to lab Recommended while staining. Required for BSL-2 work.
Safety glasses Bring to lab Required for chemical handling (staining), procedures generating splashes, or BSL-2 work.
