Lesson plan

Level: elementary (Primary stage _Grade 2)

An online session using zoom meeting.

Time :60 minutes

Teaching reading (informational text)

Objectives:

By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

Read to get the meaning of the new vocabulary from context.

Read for details to answer specific questions.

Read for gist to identify a text type (nonfiction text).

Classify animals in terms of their type.

Before reading : (20 minutes)

Task 1 : Students will be shown the 4 minutes of the following video by sharing my screen with them:

https://youtu.be/HQdiSMUZEDA?t=

(If in a school class, I will to be referring to the pictures in the students’ book about animals)

After showing the video I will ask the following question: How are animals different? (5 minutes).

Task 2 :(presentation of new vocabulary-10 minutes):

I will present the new vocabulary using Quizlet by sharing my screen with them (check using the following link: https://quizlet.com/_8qf1a4?x=1jqt&i=2quy13). The link include flash cards for each word with simple definition ,a picture(visual item) and the pronunciation of the word.

Sometimes I share the link with my students a day before the session to study the new words and save the class time. Moreover , the link includes some questions and a test on vocabulary.

During reading: (26 minutes)

Students will be asked the following question: How many different animal groups are described in the text? (four). Students will be given 5 minutes to skim the text.

I will play the audio asking students to put their finger on the word as they are reading (if in a school class, I will be moving around as they are listening asking them to point to words as they are listening). (3 minutes)

Students will be asked the following question: what makes mammal babies special? (3 minutes for answers)

Students will be asked to read a sentence out aloud, so I can detect mispronunciation. (3 minutes)

Students will be given time for quick silent reading to circle the words that they did not understand. I will ask other students to explain the meaning of these words and provide help if necessary. (5 minutes)

I will break out rooms in Zoom into four rooms (each room of five students) and each room will be assigned a paragraph in the text to read and present the information they got (the text is four paragraphs, each about an animal type: birds, fish, amphibians and mammals).(7 minutes)

Each group will answer a critical thinking question about the type of animal they read about: (5 minutes)

Can you think of any birds that can’t fly? Why? (birds group)
