Q1. (a) When undertaking levelling as part of surveying a construction site it is sometimes necessary to move the position of the instrument. Briefly describe four senarios where this is required. Under these circumstances, explain how continuity in the levelling process is maintained? (9 marks)

(b) The following were extracted from a level field book; some of the entries are illegible because of the exposure to rain. Compute and insert the missing figures and rebook the figures by the rise and fall method. Perform checks on the consistency of the data and determine the total rise and the total fall of the ground. (24 marks)

Q2. (a) Explain what is fibre reinforced concrete and why is it used in structural concrete. (6 Marks) (b) Sketch the following standard structural steelwork sections. (i) Universal Column. (ii) Steel Beam. (iii) Litzka Beam (9 Marks)

(c) Explain the following. (i) Limit State Design of a building. (ii) Dead Loads. (iii) Imposed Loads. (9 Marks)

Section B

Q4. (a) Detailed reinforced concrete construction drawings are prepared to give the contractor the information required to construct concrete building elements. Identify 4 details that these drawings must contain. (4 marks)

(b) The simply supported concrete beam is reinforced with steel as indicated in figure Q4 below. What is the purpose of the bars labelled Mk 4? Describe their function and distribution throughout the length of the beam. (6 marks)

(c) Sketch the shape of the bar(s) labelled Mk2, and explain their role(s) in the beam. (6 marks)

(d) The simply supported beam is reinforced with steel as indicated in figure Q4 below. Draw a cross section close to the supports and close to the middle of the beam (as illustrated in figure Q2) detailing the number and bar mark of each reinforcement. (8 marks)

(e) Identify and discuss strategies and criteria for integration of services within the depth of a beam close to the middle of the span of the beam and close to the supports. (9 marks)

Q5. (a) Identify and differentiate between 4 types of fabric reinforcement commonly used in RC structural elements. Identify where they may be used instead of longitudinal type reinforcement. (7 marks)

(b) Explain the reasons for providing cover to steel in RC design. (4 marks)

(c) Describe the key differences if any between flat slab or beam and slab floors. (8 marks)

(d) Describe how services may be accommodated in concrete floors. What advantages do flat slabs possess over beam and slab floors in accommodating services? (8 marks)

(e) Outline the benefits of accommodating services in ducts. (6 marks)
