**1. Based on the oxidation state, if Magnesium became an ion, would it gain or lose electrons and how many?

  1. What is the electron configuration for the magnesiumatom?

Lewis Dot Diagrams (L.D.D)

  • Lewis^ Dot^ Diagram/Structure:^ a^ diagram^ that

represents the valence electrons of an atom or ion.

  • Ex:

Sr S

Strontium atom Sulfur atom

  • Lewis^ Dot^ Diagram/Structure:^ a^ diagram^ that

represents the valence electrons of an atom or ion.

  • Ex:
  1. (^) Draw the element symbol.
  2. (^) Draw the # of valence e‐ as dots around the symbol.
  3. (^) DO NOT DRAW MORE THAN 2e‐ on any one side of the symbol.
  4. (^) Maximum # valence e‐= 8

Sr S

Strontium atom Sulfur^ atom

  • Ex:

Sr S

Strontium ion Sulfide ion

Strontium atom Sulfur atom

Sr

lost 2e as it formed, so

no electrons are drawn.

S

gained 2e as it formed,

so 8e‐ are drawn.

  1. (^) Positive ion L.D.D. have no e‐ drawn.
  2. (^) Insert the charge and brackets. 1. (^) Negative ion L.D.D. have a full shell of valence e‐ 2. (^) Insert the charge and brackets.

Sr S

loses these 2 valence e‐ gains 2 valence e‐

Draw a L.D.D. for each atom and ion:

METAL CATION

  • Barium^ atom
  • Barium^ ion

NONMETAL ANION

  • Nitrogen^ atom
  • Nitride^ ion

L.D.D. Rules Summary

atom: shows # of valence e‐ on the periodic table. ‐No more than 2e‐ drawn on any one side. positive ion: NO e‐ drawn to show the ion formed by losing e‐ ‐Draw the charge (oxidation #) and brackets. negative ion: draw a full valence shell of e‐ to show the ion formed by gaining e‐ ‐Draw the charge (oxidation #) and brackets.
