Jeffrey R. Holland
By Tia Molloy
Jeffrey R. Holland is a name that is easily recognizable for those that attend Dixie State University. This is the name of the man that the Holland Centennial Commons was named after. The Holland Centennial Commons was made to be a place for all students to come and use the resources in this building to achieve their goals. Jeffrey R. Holland was born in St. George, Utah in 1940. He attended school at Dixie State University, but at that time it was called Dixie College. After attending college, he became the president of Brigham Young University which is what he is most known for. Holland is also the author of many religious books. He married his wife, Patricia Holland, in 1963 and together they had three children, two of whom went into education as well. The building was
dedicated in 2012 by President Uchtdorf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Southern Utah was where Jeffrey R. Holland was inspired. It is appropriate that The Holland Centennial Commons was named after him because this is a place for students to come and be inspired.
How to: Reserve a Study Room
By Tia Molloy
If you have recently visited levels 2 and 4 of the Holland Building to get a study room, you may have noticed that there has been a change. Instead of the study rooms working on a first come first serve basis, the library now asks that you reserve a study room ahead of time if you wish to use one. This change was implemented because many students were finding it difficult to find available study rooms when they needed one. There are posters hanging up on the glass windows of each of the study rooms. At the bottom of these posters is a barcode that can be scanned using the camera of a smartphone. It will then take you to a webpage where you can check for upcoming availability and then reserve the room for a certain amount of time on a specific day. It will first ask you what day you would like to reserve a room and how many people are in your group. Then it will show you available times for each study room. The rooms are reserved in half hour blocks. You can then select a day and time and then enter your name, email, and D number. If you are not already in the Holland building, you could instead visit the library’s website, library.dixie.edu, scroll down to where it says schedule a study room and then click “Book A Room”. That link will take you to the same place scanning the barcode would. The study rooms are a great place for students to come and get their work done so come check them out the next time you are in the Holland.
The Benefits of The Writing Center
By Tia Molloy
Most people know that the writing center gives students feedback on writing assignments they have already begun; but they can also help students to brainstorm topics, draft them, and then revise their work. The best part is, these services are all free. Those that work at the center are qualified students who have been recommended by professors. They are there to consult with students and help them improve their writing skills. General writing feedback is the most common service the writing center offers. Making one of these appointments helps students to get general feedback on the basics of their papers. Departmental is another form of tutoring the writing center provides. This is for students that need help doing their assignments and writing papers that have to do with their specific majors. The writing center is located on the fourth floor
Introducing Hedy Lamarr
By Cadence Summers
A few years ago a new painting was hung on the wall nearest the “i” desk on the third floor. Perhaps because of its recent debut, this painting doesn’t yet have any sort of placard or caption to tell onlookers about the subject of the painting nor the artist. Painted by Dixie State University art professor Dennis Martinez, this portrait depicts actress Hedy Lamarr. For most of her lifetime, Lamarr was known for being “the most beautiful woman in the world”. What many don't know is that Lamarr and her friend George Antheil developed one of the earliest WiFi prototypes, originally developed to secretly guide submarines and ships in the US navy. At the time, the navy was not receptive to such inventions developed outside of the military and Lamarr was told she could make a greater contribution to the war effort by selling kisses. However, an updated version of her invention was used on naval ships beginning in the 1960s and is still used in Bluetooth devices. Lamarr and Antheil were posthumously inducted to the National Inventors hall of fame in 2014. Be sure to stop by the third floor and take a look at the portrait of this amazing woman!
Find Your Zen in the Rec Reading Section
By Cadence Summers
On the southern end of the second floor of the Holland Building, there stands a bank of bookshelves with a collection of books kept apart from those on the third floor. Why are the books found on these shelves housed away from the other books? The books on these shelves are what is considered “Recreational reading” (or “rec reading” for short). Featuring novels by authors such as Louis L’amour, David Baldacci and Orson Scott Card, these are not what many would consider “high literature”; instead, these books are intended to be easy, comfortable reads, many showing the wear and tear of the people who have enjoyed them
already. These shelves also house the newest arrivals at the Dixie State University Library so if you are interested in finding something new or just looking for a way to de-stress, these shelves are the place to find it! Additional “high literature” and low-commitment reads can also be found on the shelves on the third floor in the “PS” section.
