MATH 535: Homework for Chapters 1 & 2 September 2, 2003
Read Chapters 1 & 2 of the text. Most of it should be review; a little bit of it may be
new to you.
The following problems give you practice with the concepts in Chapters 1 & 2. Some are
very easy, some hard; some may be done in class. You might first browse through the
problems and see which you can do easily and which are more demanding. Be sure to
try the quizzes at the end of each chapter. They’re quick True/False and multiple choice
questions, and they have answers in the back of the book.
The majority of problems will not be turned in. Some will turn up (perhaps varied a bit)
on exams. I may ask you to hand in some of these problems for a grade later. I may also
assign additional problems.
Note: there are answers to a few selected problems in the back of the book.
