Rona Poblador Light and Shadow in Estrella Alfon’s “Magnificence”: A Reader-Response Approach Introduction The short story “Magnificence (1939),” by Estrella Alfon at first seemed to be just another typical Filipino family story where the characters; the husband, the wife and the children, were all living securely and happily as revealed in the opening sentence “ There was nothing to fear, for the man was always so gentle, so kind.” But as I continue reading, this was not the case clearly, for this story is an excellent portrayal of betrayal of one’s trust and of a mother’s impregnable thrust. Moreover, it shows how a mother becomes a woman who will stand and fight for the protection of her household. Hence, a mother is not just a house figure of a wife who does household chores but also of a strong woman who will do everything and anything for the protection of her love ones. Body The story begins with a vivid description of a man who was so gentle and so kind, thus there is nothing to fear in the side of the mother. Here, Alfon had set the tone and mood of the story positively, as indicated in the sentences “ At night when the little girl and her brother were bathed in the light of the big shaded bulb that hung over the big study table in the downstairs hall, the man would knock gently on the door, and come in. He would stand for a while just beyond the pool of light, his feet in the circle of illumination, the rest of him in shadow. ”, yet it somehow gives the readers a thought that there is a hidden agenda behind this positive atmosphere. It reminded me of the saying I have once read that says “Be aware that hidden agendas exist in all situations”. In addition, Alfon’s used of the words such as “light and shadow” connote that there’s an enigma that calls for an immediate solution. We know that light symbolizes good and
salvation while shadow for evil and condemnation since the latter’s color is near black that represents rebellion and sophistication (Word web, 2020). Going along with my readings, I did notice that Alfon established a fatherly figure in the character of Vicente, due to his parental-teacher like actions as expressed in the preceding sentences: “ for they waited for him every evening as they sat at their lessons like this. He’d throw his visor cap on the table, and it would fall down with a soft plop, then he’d nod his head to say one was right, or shake it to say one was wrong .” “ Add to the man’s gentleness and his kindness in knowing a child’s desires, his promise that he would give each of them not one pencil but two. And for the little girl who he said was very bright and deserved more, who would get the biggest pencil he could find. ”This setting returned me to the times when my father was helping me with the lessons I had in elementary and high school. He would sat with me at the wooden table and begun lecturing about my assignments. If I finish my homework ahead of time, he would gave me additional “baon’ as my reward. How I miss those days. Nevertheless, the character of Vicente is different than that of my father since Vicente wasn’t the father of the boy and the girl but a neighbor who offered to tutor the children since they were lazy in doing assignments. I had noted in my readings, the word “neighbor.” On the time of the story’s composition (1939), were wars, famine and sickness beleaguered the world (World War II, 1939- 1941 ) and the country’s society (Councell, 1941), putting a substantial trust in your neighbor is no easy fit, much more in this contemporary times, were wickedness is just over your fence. I would like to quote the bibles’ Jeremiah 9:4 that say’s “ Let everyone beware of his neighbor, and put no trust, for every neighbor is a deceiver and goes about as a slanderer.” This was excellently depicted by Alfon, and this was very evident in the use of characterization in Vicente, the antagonist of the story. I could also say, that Alfon’s Vicente, who was a neighbor, had hidden motives in the youngsters, more specifically towards the little girl. She rendered Vicente as a shadow who symbolizes evil, wickedness, and immorality. She pictured Vicente as a psychotic and pedophile who had a sexual desire towards children- a child molester. Alfon’s used of such phrases and sentences: “Vicente held the little girl by the arm; And the little girl giggled; Vicente took the girl up lightly in his arms, holding her under the
