Long or formal report is usually an expansion of short or informal report.
It involves greater length and depth of discussion of more complex problems
It is written to discuss problems or decisions that may affect the future of the departments involved or of the company, for example the feasibility report of a new branch office
Title fly and Internal title include:
a blank sheet before the internal title page
internal title page comprises of report title, author name and prepared for, prepared by, captions
Letter or Memorandum of transmittal: declares the final submission of the report and acknowledgements
Transmittal letter also includes:
authorization, transmittal details (declaration of submission)
background/methodology
main idea of the report
courteous ending with acknowledgements
The topics under Abstract include:
purpose, scope, background
data analysis, methods of research
current issues, causes/effects
problems analysis, results
solution criteria
conclusions, recommendations, benefits etc.
After the summary include the discussion of topics or body of the report
The supplemental sections come after the body of the report
These include: Bibliography, footnotes or endnotes,
Appendixes: which include topics which are not part of main report but are necessary for understanding of subject, e.g legal issues related to a project
Glossary or meanings of important terms
Index--list of topics in alphabetical order
