Introduction

The lymphatic system is a part of the circulatory and immune system.

  • It helps in removal of waste, transport of lymph, and defense against infection.

Lymph

Definition: Lymph is a clear, colorless fluid formed from tissue (interstitial) fluid and carried through lymphatic vessels. It contains lymphocytes, proteins, and fats.

  • Function:
  • Returns excess tissue fluid to blood circulation
  • Transports lymphocytes
  • Removes waste materials
  • Carries absorbed fats from intestine

Lymphatic Capillaries

  • Definition: Lymphatic capillaries are minute, thin-walled vessels present in tissues that collect interstitial fluid.
  • (^) Function:
  • Absorb excess tissue fluid
  • Initiate lymph formation

Major Lymphatic Organs

  • Lymph nodes
  • Spleen
  • Thymus
  • Tonsils

Lymph Nodes

Definition: Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures located along lymphatic vessels.

  • Function:
  • (^) Filter lymph and remove pathogens
  • (^) Produce lymphocytes
  • (^) Activate immune response

Thymus

  • (^) Definition: The thymus is a bilobed lymphatic gland located behind the sternum.
  • (^) Function:
  • Maturation of T-lymphocytes
  • Development of immune system
  • (^) Most active in childhood

Tonsils

Definition: Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue located in the throat region.

  • (^) Function:
  • (^) Trap microorganisms entering through mouth and nose
  • (^) Produce antibodies
  • (^) Provide local immunity
