Hortense and Language

Hortense uses highly formal language.

She has a wide vocabulary and uses impressive, old-fashioned, words.

New Learning

We are going to read an extract from the original novel of

‘Small Island’.

“This is one of the most important parts of the novel. It really shows Hortense under pressure. It is almost the moment that her dream collapses. When she walks into the cupboard it is heart-breaking, but also very relatable. I love the way that Levy writes Hortense

  • she is formidable, but too polite to show her anger. Still, I wouldn’t want to mess with Hortense – would you?”

This extract was selected by English Teacher, Daniel Opoku.
