Section A

QA1. The attached drawing shows the cross section and plan of a mass concrete retaining wall.

You are required to measure quantities using the civil engineering standard method of measurement (CESMM3) for (i) Provision and placing of concrete (ii) Formwork (25 Marks) The relevant parts of CESMM3 are attached.

QA2.(a) Define what is meant by the following terms used in the IEI conditions of contract.

(i) Provisional sum (2 Marks) (ii) Prime cost item (2 Marks) (iii) Interim Certificate (2 Marks) (iv) Maintenance Certificate (2 Marks) (v) Final Certificate (2 Marks)

QA2(b) Discuss the options that are available to an employer and contractor who are in dispute.

In your answer refer to the obligations/responsibilities that the engineer has under the I.E.I. conditions of contract. (5 Marks)

PART B:

ANSWER 1 QUESTION FROM THIS SECTION (20 MARKS)

Question B1.

a) Explain the classification system for hazardous chemical transport by road, and the signage used. Discuss the significance of the information contained on this signage when carrying out a risk analysis of a plant where the vehicle may be entering, or putting in place a potential response to the vehicle catching fire. (4 Marks)

b) Describe the 4 classifications of combustible products, and outline the types of extinguishing agent suitable for each. Discuss the effect of the available surface area on the combustion process. (3 Marks)

c) Discuss the main methods of heat transfer, giving examples of each in relation to building construction. (3 Marks)

d) The industrial building shown in both plan and elevation below, is constructed in timber frame construction, with a clay brick outer leaf. The windows are standard argon filled double glazing, and the roller shutter door to the large opening is also of standard construction. Using the enclosing rectangle method calculate whether this building in its present form is adequately separated from the boundary as shown on the plan below. If it is inadequately separated then provide remedial solutions to the façade to allow the building to be safely built in this location. (10 marks)

Question B2.

a) Discuss in detail the physiological effects of smoke and heat on persons involved in a fire scenario. (4 marks)

b) Calculate the volume of air required to burn 2m^3 of propane, assuming its burns in line with the following formula;

C 3 H 8 + 5O 2 = 3C0 2 + 4H 2 O (4 marks)

a) forced warm air heaters, R=0 (6 marks) b) ceiling panel heaters, R=0.67 (4 marks)

QC4 (a) Technical Guidance Document L of the Building Regs details two methods (Overall Heat loss method and the Elemental Heat loss method ) for determining if a dwelling is in compliance with the regulations. Discuss how both of these methods are applied. (6 marks)

(b) A two storey detached building measures 12 m by 18m in plan. The combined floor to ceiling height for both storeys is 5.1 m. There is a pitched roof with the insulation laid between the 2nd^ storey ceiling joists. The total external window and door areas are 24 m^2 and 5.4 m^2 respectively. Given the following U-values , use the overall heat loss method to check if the proposed dwelling is in compliance. (4 marks) Element U-value (W/m2 o^ C) Roof 0. Wall 0. Floor 0. Windows 3. Doors 3
