Accidents Involving Police Vehicles - Responsibility - Investigating Supervisor Notify the Division Commander immediately, if he/she is on duty. In the event the Commander is not on duty and the accident involves serious damage, injury or fatality, the following shall be indicated in this order a. shift commander b. divison commander c. assistant chief d. Chief. e. Mayor
- Go to the scene and examine and evaluate accident.
- Complete the appopriate reports.
- Ensure the employee is drug/alcohol tested
- Ensure operator submites a written statement of facts and circumstances contributing to the accident
- Ensure that an Alabama Uniform Traffic Accident is prepared.
- Have photos taken of the accident.
- Ensure that an Injury Report is completed for any Officer injured in the accident.
- Forward the completed forms and reports to the Divison Commander and "[email protected]" no later than the end of the shift. Any necessary delay must be approved by the Division Commander.
- Submit report of findings to the Divison Commander as soon as possible.

- Notify the Chief. In the event the Chief is not available and the accident involves serious damage to the vehicle, injury or a fatality, the Assistant Chief and Mayor will be notified.
- Go to the scene and evalute the accident if deemed necessary.
- Obtain a copy of operator's written statement.
- Obtain a copy of Alabama Uniform Traffic Accident Report.
- Ensure photographs have been taken of the accident.
- Obtain a copy of the injury reports of each Officer injured in the accident.
- Personally interview the operatory of the PD vehicle if possible.
- Forward the completed forms and reports to the Chief no later than the next working day. Delay must be approved by the Chief.

When are Hot Pursuits justified? only when the officer knows or has reasonable grounds to believe the suspect presents a clear and immediate threat to the safety of other motorists; has commited or is attempting to commit a serious felony; or when the necessity of immediate apprehension outweighs the level of danger created by the hot pursuit, as in the case of a DUI
Initiating/ Primary Unit Responsibilites
- Rests with the individual officer. the officer initiating shall, in all cases, notify Communications immediately that a pursuit is underway and communicate: a. Police unit identification b. Location, speed, and direction of travel c. vehicle description, and if known, license plate d. the specific reason for the pursuit, including known laws violated e. number of occupants
What can cause termination of a pursuit by supervisor? failure to provide pursuit information, relieved from pursuit responsiblity by an officer of higher rank, by an officer of the jurisdiction where the pursuit is underway, or when another unit is better positioned to assume both the current pursuit AND the RESPONSIBILITY for the pursuit.

Who is the Accident Review Board Composed of? 6 members - The Assistant Chief will serve as chairman. 4 employees will be chosen alphabetically from each rank: Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Officer with one of these being from the Traffic Unit as well as the Human Resources Representative (non voting) 1. minimum of 3 members must be present to proceed voting. 2. Each member will have one vote, except for chairman, who will not vote unless there is a tie. 3. With the exception of chairman and HR representative, members will be randomly selected to serve on the board an unspecified number of time.
