Objective:

The objective of this experiment is to obtain the slope of temperature and pressure of saturated

steam for water between 0 and 10 bars and to compare the values calculated to those found on

the published steam tables.

Introduction:

Thermodynamics is the study of the effect of work, heat and energy on a system and its

surroundings, and the relationship between heat and other forms of energy. It is concerned with

change in the properties of fluids.

An ideal gas obeys the general gas equation that relates the pressure, specific volume or density,

and absolute temperature with mass of molecule and the gas constant, R. The equation is based

on the assumptions that: the gas particles are constantly moving and they collide with container

walls to cause pressure, they have a negligible volume in comparison to the gas molecules,

there is no interaction between the particles and average kinetic energy between them is

proportional to the temperature. The equation is therefore interpreted as,

and hf + hfg = hg  hfg = hg - hf

where, vf = specific volume of water

vg = specific volume of steam

hf = enthalpy of water

hg = enthalpy of steam

hfg = latent heat of vaporization

A Marcet Boiler is an experimental apparatus that is used to determine the relationship between

pressure and temperature, and it can be used to verify the Antoine Equation.

Apparatus

  • Marcet Boiler:

▪ Safety Valve

▪ Boiler with insulating jacket

▪ Bourdon tube pressure gauge

▪ Switch cabinet with temperature display

▪ Drain Valve

▪ Heater

▪ Overflow

▪ Temperature sensor

Procedures:

  1. Opened the level valve and switched on the power supply.
  2. Set the temperature 'setpoint' to 180^0 C.
  3. Ensured that there was no air trapped in the boiler.
  4. Switched off the level valve and heated until the maximum gauge pressure reached 8 bars.
  5. When the device is pressurized, the filler must not be removed or open level valve..
  6. Reduced the temperature 'setpoint' to room temperature.
  7. Recorded all temperature readings at different pressure settings of the boiler when the boiler

was heated and cooled.

Analysis of results

Figure 2: A graph showing the relationship between the absolute pressure and temperature

Discussion

Having air in the boiler could affect the accuracy of the results. Thus, it is

necessary to ensure that air is removed from the boiler. In the experiment,

sources of error might be caused by the measurement and reading accuracy and

calculations. The liquid absorbs heat energy causes it to change to vapour.

There will be an increase in pressure and temperature as the steam is not

allowed to exit the boiler. Industrial applications of Marcet Boiler include, hot

water boiler, gasifier, power generation and cooking utilities.

Conclusion

From the experiment, the relationship between the absolute pressure and

temperature is directly proportional. When comparing the theoretical slope and

the experimental slope, there seems to be a small variation in the values which

might have been caused by certain error during the experiment or calculations.

The percentage error between the calculated and measured slope ranges

between 1.83% to 22.9%. Apart from the variation in the values, the experiment

can be considered successful as all the objectives were achieved. Although,

repeating the experiment could improve the reliability and accuracy of the

results.
