Maus Project Options
Directions:
1. Choose one of the following options below for a project to be completed while reading Maus by Art
Spiegelman.
2. Carefully read the directions for your project.
3. Complete one response for each chapter we read. Some weeks you will have one chapter to read
and some weeks you will have two.
4. It is important to keep up with the work on the project because you will be graded weekly.
5. Turn in your work on Blackboard each week.
6. After we complete the novel, depending on the project you choose (for example, the newspaper),
you may have to compile your work into a final document or project. See me with questions about
this.
7. This project will be completed in addition to the other assignments while reading the novel.
Schedule:
March 8-12: Chapter 1
March 15-19: Chapter 2 and Chapter 3
March 22-26: Chapter 4 and Chapter 5
March 29-April 2: Spring Break
April 5-9: Chapter 6 (no response required) and Projects Due April 9
Hints:
1. As you read the chapters, you may want to annotate the pages or jot down notes: highlight important
points or events, add text boxes, or other comments to help you
2. There is a file of resources on Blackboard where you will find interesting information about the art,
music, and textiles of the Holocaust, as well as other related historical information and information
about Art Spiegelmans’s family. You may find some of this helpful in creating your projects.
Option 1 Create a Graphic Novel: In this project option, you will create a graphic novel like the one that
is presented by Art Spiegelman in Maus. This graphic novel will be based on your story and your life. This can
be segments of different experiences (the time I broke my arm, my first accident, my favorite memory) in your
life or it can be chronological (for example, the day I was born to today). The choice is up to you. For each
chapter that we read in class, you will make your own chapter. The length of each chapter is up to you, but it
should contain at least one page of frames per chapter read in class. You can create the graphic novel digitally
or by hand. Include an explanation (a bulleted list is fine) of the graphic devices you used to tell your story, as
well as an explanation of any symbolism you have used in your story.

Option 2 Create Social Media: In this project option, you will create social media accounts for characters in Maus. The social media accounts will be based on 4 characters from the book: Vladek Spiegelman, Art Spiegelman, Mala Spiegelman, and a character of your choice. You can choose to make accounts on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook (others may be considered, but check with me). Templates are provided for each type of social media. The characters’ accounts will interact with each other throughout the reading of Maus. At the end of each chapter, you will create a post for each character (including relevant images). For each post that you make, at least one other character will respond to the post. In total, you should have 8 posts per chapter. You may choose to change your fourth character with each chapter, depending on who is introduced in that chapter, or you can follow the same character, even through chapters where they are not included. (For example, we don’t see Lucia after Chapter 1, but what if she was still following Vladek on social media?) This is an opportunity to look at what life would have been like during this time if these characters would have had access to social media. Option 3 Create a Newspaper: In this project option, you will make a newspaper based on the events and stories shared in Maus. This newspaper will be updated throughout the course of the novel. There should be at least two articles per chapter. Your newspaper should include categories just like a normal newspaper would. For instance, there can be categories about ( opinion, obituary, sports, politics, health, and so on ). However, note that there should not be a newspaper full of just one category. It should be varied based on what we are reading about in Maus. Option 4 Interview Characters: For this project option, you will be interviewing characters from Maus. For each chapter that we read in class, you will make a set of at least 5 questions for a character of your choice. You will also answer those questions based on how you think the character in the story would respond to the questions. These will not be yes/no or simple one word or phrase answers. The questions and answers should involve deeper thinking into the characters and their lives and relationships. In total, you will have 5 questions and 5 responses for each chapter of Maus. You can change which character you ask questions to between chapters, but not in the middle of a chapter. For instance, in chapter 1 you can ask questions to Vladek, but in chapter two you may want to change to Art. Option 5 Podcast discussing MAUS : For this project option, you will be creating a podcast based on the characters and events in Maus. For each chapter that we read in class, you will make a podcast where you discuss the characters and events in Maus. The podcast must have a set of at least 5 questions that you will answer for each chapter. The podcast should be more than just questions and responses. It will be an in-depth look at characters motivations and thinking. One question you might pose during your podcast might be “If I were in a similar situation, how do I think I would react?” Option 6 Writing: For this project option, you will be creating an original work based on your experiences and the experiences of the characters in Maus. This piece of writing can be lyrical/auditory, such as original song lyrics or poetry. It can also be narrative/visual, such as a biography or diary. Each week, you will have one original piece of writing to submit. You can have multiple forms of writing. One week, you may write a poem. The next week, you may write an entry in a diary. Each work will include a brief written explanation describing your choices, what you chose to represent and why, and how it relates to what is going on in the chapter. Option 7 Create your own project: Have an idea for your project? Let me know what you are thinking, and we can decide on a plan for you.
