Measurement

Measuring Distance

  • Distance is the length from one point to another
  • The tool we use in class to measure distance is the ruler or meter stick.
  • Meter : basic unit of distance in the metric system Meters are abbreviated using the letter m
  • Centimeter (cm) :
  • 100 centimeters make a meter.
  • A cm is 1/100 of a meter
  • Kilometer (km) :
  • 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer
  • Millimeter (mm) :
  • 1000 millimeters make a meter.
  • 10 millimeters make a cm.
  • One mm is 1/1000 of a meter.

Five things you need on every graph

before you plot the points

  1. Title
  2. label for x axis with units
  3. label for y axis with units
  4. scale for x axis
  5. scale for y axis

How to plot points on a graph

  1. Draw or run fingers along

the horizontal and vertical

lines from the points on

the axes

How to plot points on a graph

  1. Where lines meet,

plot the point.

How to find information using the best fit line

on the graph

  • Find value given in the problem on the correct

axis.

  • Run your finger straight along that line until you

get to the graphing line.

  • Then read across or

down to the value on

the other axis.

  • There is your answer.

Measuring Mass

  • Mass is the amount of matter in a substance
  • Like weight – but weight is the pull of gravity on mass.

Mass does not change. Weight changes depending on where you are – for example the moon.

  • The tool we use to measure mass is the triple beam balance.
  • Gram: Basic unit of mass in the metric system Grams are abbreviated using the letter g
  • Kilogram (Kg) :
  • 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram
  • Milligrams (mg) :
  • 1000 milligrams make a gram.
  • One mg is 1/1000 of a gram.

The mass here is 60+2.5 =62.5g

Measuring Volume

  • Volume is the amount of space an object takes up
  • The tool we use in class to measure volume is the graduated cylinder.
  • Liter : basic unit of volume in the metric system
  • Liters are abbreviated using the letter L
  • Volume in class is measured in milliliters
  • milliliters are abbreviated mL
  • Guess how many milliliters are in 1 liter?
  • 1000ml = 1L

How to read a graduated cylinder

  1. Get down so the line is at eye level
  2. Look at the bottom of the meniscus
  3. Watch the scale!

Use a graduated cylinder to measure the volume of an

irregularly shaped solid:

  1. Fill the graduated cylinder to 50.0 ml.
  2. Slide the object in on an angle.
  3. Subtract 50.0 ml from the new water level.

1.0 milliliter = 1.0 cubic centimeter

What is the volume of the object?

Displacement is the term we use

when an object takes the place of

the water.

Measuring Temperature

Measure the temperature of water in the

beaker.

  • Is it hot?
  • Is it cold?

If it were that warm inside a refrigerator,

or on a ski slope, would it be hot or cold?

If it were that warm inside an oven would

it be hot or cold?
