Benefits of Watching Anime among Teenagers
Little animated characters running across the screen, jumping up and down with glee in
their eyes as they defeat the antagonist. ā€˜Who are these characters?’ you may ask. Well,
they originate from special Japanese cartoons, which are better known as anime. In Asia,
anime series and movies, with their extensive contents and storylines which include
adventure, comedy, romance, and others, have been influential since the 1980s. To date,
the Japanese animated television series have penetrated major Asian cities through their
export and import across national and cultural boundaries. Japanese cartoon characters,
such as Hello Kitty, Sailormoon, Dragonball, and Digimon are extremely popular among
millions of viewers, especially teenagers due to their colourful and lively graphics. Many
parents have raised concerns about their teenagers getting addicted to anime series.
However, recent studies have claimed that watching them benefit teenagers in so many
ways.
To begin with, the influence of anime series and movies has made a noticeable impact
on increasing teenagers’ social interaction, namely by making them more open to
communicating with others instead of being introverts. Teenagers, especially of working
parents, can overcome the boredom and depression of being alone in their free time by
watching anime. For instance, many teenagers are currently experiencing pressure due

outside world. Therefore, watching anime series and movies not only alleviates loneliness but also increases happiness since teens can stay connected with other peers who watch anime and share similar interest. Thus, new friendships are not only created but a deeper bond is established with peers of various age groups. Another benefit that teenagers can gain by watching anime series is that they can learn real life lessons. Watching how heroes overcome hardships in life helps them to think out of the box, deal with challenging situations, and grow successful unlike watching comedy series which convey real life lessons in very subtle ways. Anime series including My Hero Academia , A Silent Voice and Orange are also popular in terms of instilling moral values. These series teach teens to respect their parents, be thankful, avoid bullying others, and most importantly, overcome egotism. Many good anime series have also projected the significance of relationships - to understand their value in life and employ ways to maintain them. In addition, anime emphasises teamwork to get things done and achieve success. Dragon Ball Z and Haikyuu are well-liked series that inspire teens to strive beyond their limits, be independent, stay committed, set goals and work hard while chasing their dreams. The New Game anime, for example, shows viewers the meaning of undergoing struggles to achieve what they want in life and teaches them the ways to overcome the troubles of starting as a beginner. Furthermore, other values such as righteousness, generosity, honesty, courage and patience are learnt. Therefore, another important benefit of watching anime series and movies is it instils positive values. Last but not least, watching anime series and movies can encourage teenagers to develop interest in learning about the Japanese culture and language. Anime dates back to the birth of Japan’s film industry in the early 1900s and has emerged as one of the country’s major cultural forces over the past century. Anime series are a good option for teenagers to learn more about the Japanese culture in an entertaining way. Even if understanding is limited, anime helps them to ā€˜grow closer’ to the culture by gaining insights into the Japanese way of life. Also, as these series and movies are made with Japanese audio clips, the Japanese language can be picked up easily. With all that has been said, parents ought to realise that teenagers can gain much from watching anime series or movies: they enhance teenagers’ social interaction with others, instil moral values, expose them to life lessons, and open their minds to learning other
