Week 6 Discussion: Middle Adulthood Development
Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:
Textbook: Chapter 15, 16
Lesson
Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)
Initial Post Instructions
Option 1: In your readings this week, there is an extensive discussion on the physical decline
that adults in their middle adulthood may likely face. What are some small steps that a 30-year-
old patient can take now that can help reduce some of the negative physical consequences that
they could experience at 50-years-old? Address at least 2 of the 6 listed:
Diet
Exercise
Substance use, abuse, dependence (caffeine, nicotine, THC, etc.)
Stress
Sleep
Sexual behaviors
Option 2: You are likely aware that a person's cognitive functioning can affect their social and
emotional well-being. For this discussion, you will be responsible for integrating the concepts of
chapters 15 and 16. The textbook tells us that the number of relationships may decline in middle
adulthood, just as processing speed and working memory may also decline. What are some
ways that people can integrate social activities/ make friends or nurture the relationships that
they have, while simultaneously improving their cognitive functioning?
Some examples may include activities like:
Dance lessons
Choir
Chess clubs, etc.
Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
Writing Requirements
Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside source)
APA format for in-text citations and list of references
Grading
This activity will be graded using the Discussion Grading Rubric. Please review the following

Hello Class, For this week’s discussion I have decided to go with option 1.

One of the steps that a 30-year-old patient can take now to help reduce some of the negative physical consequences that they could experience at 50-years-old quit smoking cigarettes, vapors, and other nicotine devices. I would inform my patient some of the normal physical declines that tends to happen with aging and provide them with the information of how much more the decline can happen with the continued use of tobacco products. For example, according to (Santrock, 2018, p. 471), by age 55 years, the lung capacity to obtain oxygen and to get it in their blood decreases; for smoker at the same age, it decreases even further. If the patient was to quit tobacco use now, then they would be able to improve their lung capacity by middle adulthood. I would also inform the patient of some of the benefits of releasing themselves of tobacco product. For example, according to (Jha, 2020), cessation before the age of 40 years greatly lowers the mortality risk. Former smokers have about ¼ of the excess risk of death compared to current smokers. These excessive risks can be anything from cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, stroke, and etc. Another step the 30-year-old patient can take now to reduce some of the negative physical consequences they could experience at 50-years-old is by changing exercising and dietary habits. The reason I list exercising and dietary habits together is because they tend to go hand in hand. According to (Santrock, 2018, p.468), obesity increases from early to middle adulthood. Obesity can become a critical problem going into middle adulthood which may carry other adverse health issues along such as diabetes, hypertensions, higher risk for stroke and cardiovascular disease, along with other illness and premature death. If the 30-year-old patient was to get started with weight management, resistance training, they can improve their odds of better health as they go into middle adulthood. It was found that a greater intake of fruits and vegetables was linked to increased bone density in middle-age and older adults, according to (Santrock, 2018, p.469). Another reason why I would encourage my patient to take the steps to start changing their exercise and dietary habits now is so that they can also minimize cardiovascular issues later in middle adulthood. both physical and psychological during this period, but not everyone will experience a midlife crisis. It depends on a person’s personality, life experiences, and how they perceive their lives so far. I personally do not believe that I will go through a mid-life crisis. I do my best to live in the present moment as much as possible. I also come from a very old family where taking care of our elders is treated as a way of life. I have yet to find anything in my life that I regret and feel as if the best is yet to come. I do not see high school, college, or my 20s as the high point of my life. I enjoy my life and the people around me. My daughter went away to college in the Fall of 2018, and it is as if she never moved out. I have strong interpersonal relationships with my parents, siblings, and children. I understand my spouse’s personality and behavior and I keep a small dependable circle of friends. I have made peace with my life and the lives of those around me. I have come to a point in my life to where I plan as much as possible and remain flexible enough to change when necessary. I am fully aware that I may change my mind about this point of view in 10 years when I am 48 going on 49, but for right now even with all the aches and pains that goes with aging, I am at peace with my age. I am fortunate to still have both of my parents and grandmothers alive to take care of where many people do not have those people. I am hopeful to see my grandmothers reach the century mark within the next two years. I am also fortunate for my children to have relationships with both of their great grandmothers. I am at an age where I have already begun to lose friends and loved ones. As it will always feel too soon for them to go, I know that they want me to stay in the present. References: Wethington, E.
