Andrade Global literacy aims to address issues of globalization, racism, diversity and social justice (Guo, 2014). It requires awareness and action, consistent with a broad understanding of humanity, the planet, and the impact of human decision on both. It also aims to empower students with knowledge and take action to make a positive impact in the world and their local community (Guo, 2014).

Capital Race: A person’s skin color can have a great impact on their experience in society. Ethnicity: Ethnicity relates to a person’s culture and nationality. Religion: It is important to understand that people have different religious belief or no religious beliefs.

Capital Language: While English is commonly used in American classrooms, for some students, it is not the language they speak at home. Socioeconomic Status: A student’s socioeconomic status can affect their ability to participate in the classroom without some type of accommodation. Sexual Orientation: A student’s sexual orientation can have a great impact on how they are experiencing the world. Gender Identity: Similar to sexual orientation, it is important to understand each student’s gender identity and how they would prefer to be recognized.
