PART 2: SHORT ANSWER QUESTION PAPER

ANSWER ALL FOUR QUESTIONS

These four questions account for two thirds of the written paper marks and are allocated 2 hours to complete.

Q3. Write short answers on (a) The indications for lithium treatment and any investigations you might consider prior to commencing this treatment (b) The side effects and complications of lithium treatment (c) The features of an episode of deliberate self-harm which would necessitate an individual being admitted to an acute psychiatric in-patient unit (d) The management of a patient in a severe alcohol withdrawal state on a medical ward

Q4. (a) List the common “negative” symptoms that may be present in schizophrenia (b) Write a short note outlining factors that are associated with an increased risk of violence in individuals with schizophrenia (c) Write a short note describing the process of involuntary detention of a patient from the community into an acute psychiatric unit under the Mental Health Act

  1. Outline the usual role of the General Practitioner in this process. (d) List the common features of a manic episode.

Q5. (a) List the psychological conditions experienced by women in the post partum period. Describe the typical presentation of one of these conditions. (b) Describe the Mini Mental State Examination and its utilisation. (c) List 10 causes of memory impairment in a 75 year old man (d) List symptoms and signs consistent with a diagnosis of Panic Disorder.

Q6 (a) List 5 possible physical complications of anorexia nervosa in a 15 year old

girl.

(b) List the 3 core areas of autism. For each area provide 2 examples of how these difficulties manifest themselves. (c) A 7 year old boy is referred to a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) clinic for inattention in school. List 5 possible differential diagnoses. (d) Describe 5 key aspects of the assessment and management of a depressive episode in a 13 year old girl referred by her GP to a CAMHS Clinic.
