Subject: Science
Grade Level: Grade 8
Objective: Explain ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, and
excretion and distinguish each from the other., Describe the function of each
organ of the digestive function.
Learning within and across curriculum:
- Within:
1) Health - Understanding the digestive system is essential to maintaining overall
health and well-being. By knowing how the body processes food, students can make
informed choices about their diet.
2) Chemistry - Chemical reactions occur during digestion, breaking down food into
nutrients that can be absorbed by the body. Understanding these reactions involves
knowledge of chemistry principles.
3) Home Economics - Cooking and preparing food also play a role in digestion.
Learning about food preparation can enhance students' understanding of how
different foods affect the digestive process.
ENGAGE:
[Teaching Strategy: Interactive Quizzes]
[Instructional Materials: Whiteboard, Markers]
1) Idea - Conduct a quick quiz on the digestive system using the whiteboard.
Students can answer questions individually or in groups to encourage participation.
2) Idea - Organize a role-playing activity where students act out the journey of food
through the digestive system, highlighting the functions of each
organ.Explore:Explore:
Activity 1: Digestive System Model
[Teaching Strategy: Experiential Learning]
Materials - Paper, Markers, Scissors
Significance - This hands-on activity allows students to create a model of the
digestive system, reinforcing their understanding of the organs involved.
Instructions -
1) Students will draw and cut out the different organs of the digestive system.
2) They will assemble the model in the correct order to show the flow of food.
3) Rubric
- Accuracy of organ placement - 15 pts.

ACTIVITY: A Journey to Digestion! SCRIPT: T: Today, we will have a riddle game with a twist. Are you ready? S: Yes teacher! T: Before we start, I will read the instructions. I have here an outline of the human body and a set of pictures of life-sized of the digestive organs attached in the blackboard. Here’s the twist. You will need to answer a riddle in order to fill or complete the pathway of food through the digestive. Every correct answer, you will pin/attach the picture in the outlined human body. Are we clear? S:Yes teacher. T: Riddle number 1. (show a ppt slide) I churn and I squirm, breaking food down, Acid and enzymes turn it around. What's left is a mush, a soupy brew, Ready to move on, to where it's due. What am I? (repeat 3 times) S: (raising their hands). T: Nicole, what’s the answer? S: Stomach teacher. T:Very good, can you attach the stomach to the human body? S:(attached the picture) T: Let’s proceed to the 2nd^ riddle. (show a ppt slide) I'm the last stretch, the final run, Absorbing water until I'm done. Waste is formed and compacted tight, Ready to exit, bid it goodnight. What am I? (repeat 3 times) S:(raising their hands). T: Sofia, what's your answer? S: Large intestine, teacher. T:Okay, can you attach the large intestine? S:(attached the picture). T:Very good! The 3rd^ riddle. (show a ppt slide) I start where you put food in your face, Traveling down, I find my space. Acid and enzymes help break me down, Until I reach a tube, long and brown.

S:(raising their hand) T:Okay, Jose what’s your answer? S:It’s Rectum, teacher. T:Okay, good. Can you attach the picture? S:(attached the picture) T:Good job, everyone!

ACTIVITY: Digestive System Relay Race

SCRIPT:

T: We will going to have an interactive race relay. Are you excited? S:We are very excited, teacher. T: Before we start, I will read the mechanics first. 1.) I will divide you into 3 groups with 4-5 members. I will place the flashcards with the names of digestive organs (e.g., stomach, small intestine) at one end of the room and the flashcards with their corresponding functions (e.g., digestion of food, absorption of nutrients) at the other end. 2.) When the race begins, the first student from each team runs to the organ cards, picks one, and runs back to their team to match it with the correct function card. 3.) Once the match is confirmed, the next student in line repeats the process until all the organ-function pairs are correctly matched. 4.)The team that finishes first with all correct matches wins the relay race. Are we clear? S:Yes teacher! T:Let me group you first. (teacher groups the students) T:Okay, you are already grouped. Let’s start! S:(students participate the game)
