WHAT IS A NARRATIVE POEM?
- A poem that tells a story.
- Has a beginning, middle and end.
- Uses a range of poetry techniques for effect.
POETRY TECHNIQUES – YOU MAY COME ACROSS
THESE WHEN READING NARRATIVE POETRY
- Simile A simile describes something or someone ‘like’ or ‘as’ something else. Example: ‘She was as white as a ghost’
- Alliteration Alliteration is the repetition of the same starting sound in several words of a sentence. Example: ‘Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper.’
- Rhyme A rhyme is a word that is identical to another in its terminal sound. Example: ‘Cat and Hat’ Example 2: ‘While and Mile’
- Rhythm Rhythm refers to the pattern of sounds made varying the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem.
AN EXAMPLE OF NARRATIVE POETRY
- On the next slide you will see an example of narrative poetry.
- It is called ‘Skippy the naughty kangaroo’ and it is written by Luke Thomas French.
- I want you to read through the poem and then together we will read through the questions that follow.
- Who are the main characters?
- What features of narrative poetry can you note in the poem? Narrative poems tell a story and tend to be long, with multiple verses; they usually rhyme, with a relatively easy rhyme and rhythm structure to make it easier to recite aloud.
- What is happening in this poem? What story is it telling?
TASK
- Each group will have a narrative poem that they will read and answer questions on.
- The main objective for today’s learning is to gauge whether you understand what a narrative poem is, the structures it uses, and, if you can read and interpret the story being told.
- Tomorrow’s task will allow you to create your own narrative poem.
