Nelson Mandela is one of the most respected leaders in history, known for his lifelong struggle against racial injustice. Born in 1918, he became a key figure in the fight against apartheid , a system in South Africa that legally separated people by race and denied Black citizens their basic rights. Because of his activism with the African National Congress (ANC), Mandela was arrested and sentenced to life in prison in 1962. He spent 27 years behind bars, much of it on Robben Island. During this time, he became a global symbol of resistance, and the international community constantly protested for his release. In 1990, Mandela was finally freed. Instead of seeking revenge against those who imprisoned him, he chose to work toward peace. He collaborated with the government to end apartheid and establish a fair democracy for all South Africans. For these efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In 1994, Mandela made history by becoming South Africa’s first Black president. His leadership focused on reconciliation and healing a divided nation. Even after his death in 2013, Mandela’s legacy continues to inspire people worldwide to fight for equality with courage and forgiveness.
