Newborn Screening: Identifying Congenital Disorders through Blood Tests, Study notes of Biology

Newborn screening is a mandatory procedure for identifying inherited diseases and congenital disorders in newborns through a blood test, also known as a heel prick. The test is available in hospitals, lying-in centers, rhus, and health centers. The basic newborn screening costs p550, while extended screening costs p1500. The test should be done between the 48th and 72nd hours of life. Newborns are screened for metabolic, hormonal, and hemoglobin issues. The initial screening detected only 6 disorders, but now, 28 disorders are detected. Confirmatory screening facilities are available at brent hospital and zcmc.
