Notational Analysis in Sports: A Systematic Approach to Performance Evaluation, Study notes of Sport Studies

Notational analysis is an objective method of recording events during sports performance, allowing for accurate and reliable feedback for coaches and athletes. the concept of notational analysis, its applications in tactical and technical evaluation, movement analysis, and database development. The document also discusses the challenges of analyzing live sporting performance and the benefits of electronic notational analysis systems like Pro Zone.

What is Notational Analysis?

Image by Gael Marzious Notational analysis is a objective way of recording events during performance allowing critical events in that performance to be quantified in a consistent and reliable manner. This objective method of analysing performance allows for accurate and objective feedback which is vital for an effective coach – athlete feedback process. The applications of notational analysis can be defined into the following areas;

  • Tactical evaluation
  • Technical evaluation
  • Analysis of movement
  • Development of a database and modelling
  • For educational use with both coaches and player

In an earlier lecturer research by

Franks and Miller (1986) was

mentioned regarding coaches

recollection on events during sports

performance – this lecture will include

Electronic Notational Analysis Systems

Pro Zone

It must be remembered that hand notation

systems are not the only type of notational

analysis systems which exist. Pro Zone is a

comprehensive data collection software

system which can be used to collect tactical

data via electronic notational analysis.

The benefits of electronic notational analysis systems include;

  • Storage of vast amounts of data
  • In depth analysis opportunities
  • Ability to analyse more than one aspect of performance
  • Easy to navigate and develop player profiles
  • Frequency tables, scatter diagrams and sequential systems can all be used in tandem to allow detailed analysis.

How Accurate are Notational Analysis Systems?

The key factor with any analysis is the

repeatability and accuracy of the system

being used. If these are missing then the

results produced are not meaningful and

maybe detrimental to performance. To

ensure high levels of accuracy analysts

should take the following steps;

Why is this important?

  • Be clear of the definitions of each variable being analysed – what is a successful cross?
  • Data processing should be carefully examined as selected results may mask original or actual game/performance events.
  • If more than one analyst is working on a project always check for inter-operator reliability.
    • When using a new system always check for reliability/validity prior to use in a ‘live’ situation. Any errors should be removed before use. Image by Vedia
