Engineering Technologist in Society: Research and Intellectual Property, Lecture notes of Society and Environment

The ethical considerations surrounding research and intellectual property in engineering technology. It delves into the concept of honesty, integrity, and reliability in research, highlighting various forms of dishonesty such as plagiarism, trimming, and cooking. The document also discusses the importance of confidentiality and conflict of interest in research, emphasizing the need for ethical conduct in engineering practice. It further examines the concept of intellectual property and its legal protections, providing examples of different types of ip rights.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST IN SOCIETY

CHAPTER 5 Research and Intellectual Properties

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the scope of engineering technology ethics in research and intellectual properties
  • Define the function of engineering technologist in research activity

Research

  • Challenges in Research : Examples of problems that arise as an engineering technologist if associated with issues such as irresponsibility, lack of experience and skills, lack of technical knowledge, lack of focus and lack of interest in the task given.
  • Concept Design is about forming, modeling, shaping a new idea, approach, abstraction of an implementation. Examples of concepts in this context are : eHealth, customer self-service, 360 client view, robotics and 3 d printing
  • Preliminary analyses on any data set include checking the reliability of measures, evaluating the effectiveness of any manipulations, examining the distributions of individual variables, and identifying outliers.
  • Detailed analysis involves performing research and separating results into smaller, logical topics to form reasonable conclusions. It presents a specific argument about the topic and supports that argument with evidence. You can perform an analysis to find different solutions to a challenge in a variety of situations.

Honesty, integrity and reliability

  • Honesty : Honesty is the quality of being

truthful and fair, and it involves not lying,

stealing, or deceiving. It also means being

trustworthy, loyal, and sincere

Forms of dishonesty Dishonesty is a character defect that involves intentionally misrepresenting the truth for personal gain. It can take many forms, including:

  • Lying: A form of dishonesty that can affect what we say, do, think, and feel
  • Cheating: An act of academic dishonesty that can include illicitly sharing answers with a friend during a test
  • Plagiarism: Using another person's ideas or words without acknowledgment
  • Fabrication: Making up information to support a point or misrepresenting sources
  • Collusion: When two or more students present joint work as if it was their own
  • Multiple submissions: Submitting academic work for which academic credit has already been earned
  • Misuse of academic materials: Stealing, destroying, or unauthorized possession/alteration/sale/purchase of any academic materials
  • Dishonesty can be driven by other defects of character or emotion, such as pride, jealousy, envy, greed, sloth, lust, anger, fear, guilt, and shame

ISSUE 2: Trimming

  • Trimming / alteration
  • Preliminary analyses on any data set include checking the reliability of measures, evaluating the effectiveness of any manipulations, examining the distributions of individual variables, and identifying outliers.
  • Detailed analysis involves performing research and separating results into smaller, logical topics to form reasonable conclusions. It presents a specific argument about the topic and supports that argument with evidence. You can perform an analysis to find different solutions to a challenge in a variety of situations.

ISSUE 3: Cooking

Honesty, integrity and reliability

  • Integrity : Integrity is the quality of being

honest and having strong moral principles

that are consistently upheld.

  • It can also refer to the state of being

complete or undivided.

ISSUE 4:

Confidentiality

PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION ACT 2010

Intellectual property (IP)

  • Intellectual property (IP) is a legal term for intangible creations of the mind, such as inventions, stories, artistic works, or symbols. IP is owned by a person or company and is protected from unauthorized use by others.
  • Some examples of IP include:
  • Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks, Trade secrets, Industrial designs, Layout designs of integrated circuits, and Geographical indications.
  • IP rights give creators exclusive rights to their work, allowing them to profit from their creative efforts.
  • Legal protections for IP vary by type, and some last forever while others expire after a certain amount of time.
  • In Malaysia, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) is responsible for managing and developing the IP system. MyIPO administers and enforces IP legislation, including the Trademarks Act 2019, the Patents Act 1983, and the Copyright Act 1987.

Conflicts of interest

  • A situation in which the concerns or aims of two different parties are incompatible.
  • "the conflict of interest between elected officials and corporate lobbyists"
  • A situation in which a person is in a position to derive personal benefit from actions or decisions made in their official capacity.
