Most students study in a way that looks productive, but it's actually teaching your brain the opposite skill.

Why your notes aren’t working

Instead of: Retention (keeping it in your memory) Understanding Recall Your brain learns: Transcription Passive recognition False confidence (“I recognise this so I must know it.”

The 5-Minute Note Craft Fix

(You can do This Today)

This is the minimum viable version of the Note Craft Method. Step 1: Read the heading and pause Don’t jump into the paragraph. Ask: “What do I think this will be about?” You activate prior knowledge → comprehension skyrockets. Step 2: Read one small section at a time Not the whole chapter. Not a page. Just one section. Your brain learns in micro-chunks.

Step 3: Create the questions This is where your notes start to mirror exams. For each new chapter, choose one or more examiner action verb from each of the 6 levels. Write you answers in bullet points instead of long paragraphs. Sometimes you’ll only need to write a short answer. After Mao Zedong died in 1976, who became China’s new leader? Deng Xiaoping for example:

The neuroscience behind

The Note Craft method

Your brain has two methods: MODE 1: Passive encoding (re-reading, highlighting, rewriting, watching videos) Studies show that it’s the lowest level of studying, with a 29% success rate. MODE 2: Active Retrieval (answering questions, summarising, teaching) Studies show that this is the best method for studying, with a 57 % success rate.
