REED PERFORMANCE TASK: MORALITY ESSAY
It is in the nature of human beings to have the ability to determine, decide, and ascertain the course of
action. This holds true in both morality and ethics. Morality is not just a distinction between right and wrong but
rather a practice of ethics. While ethics and morals are often used interchangeably, their similarity lies in their
ability to differentiate good from bad. Ethics represents the judgment of right and wrong as it studies behavior
while morality offers practical guidance for the behavior and is the refinement of ethics. One cannot define
morality without understanding ethics. The standard of character conduct that is globally accepted is called ethics.
These are the rules that shape our personality and attitude and are based on what others perceive as right or wrong.
On the other hand, morals are a set of customs commonly referred to as “unsaid rules” that are set by a group of
individuals. These are based on our own perspectives and differ from society to society. Morality is about the
actions that we need to undertake in order to keep the essence and value of ethics alive. Both ethics and morality
help individuals to become better people by promoting qualities desirable for a person. Morality can be
differentiated into descriptive and normative morality. Descriptive morality is concerned with the way people
think things are and what people actually do while normative morality is about upholding morals through actions
that depict how people should actually behave. An example of descriptive morality is stealing is bad, while an
example of normative morality would be do not steal. Human acts are done with our free will and intellect thus
holding us accountable for our actions as moral or immoral.
Academic dishonesty is immoral however it has unfortunately become a common occurrence in school
settings. I, as a student, have succumbed to this temptation which led me to face the consequences of my actions
and greatly regret it. I thought that showing my answers to a close friend was proof of our good relationship and
that it would be beneficial for the other party as she was too busy working in their family business to answer
assignments and study for tests. The help I thought I offered caused my friend to be overly dependent on my
answers and no longer tried to study. In the end, my friend wasnt able to pass the exams on her own and had to
take summer classes. Her family was experiencing severe financial difficulties during that time. Her family had

Academic dishonesty is immoral however it has unfortunately become a common occurrence in school settings. I, as a student, have succumbed to this temptation which led me to face the consequences of my actions and greatly regret it. I thought that showing my answers to a close friend was proof of our good relationship and that it would be beneficial for the other party as she was too busy working in their family business to answer assignments and study for tests. The help I thought I offered caused my friend to be overly dependent on my answers and no longer tried to study. In the end, my friend wasn’t able to pass the exams on her own and had to take summer classes. Her family was experiencing severe financial difficulties during that time. Her family had

to delay the schooling of her little brother so that they could afford her tuition for summer classes. She also had to transfer to a public high school in her province since she didn’t want to burden her parents. I knew how much my friend loved our school and the people she met in it. Her decision to transfer wasn’t an easy choice as she would be leaving the place that had her precious memories since her childhood. She didn’t blame me but I blamed myself. I wish I could’ve found other methods to help her study and pass her tests rather than suggesting and tolerating cheating. There are still times when I am tempted to just hand out my answers when people ask for them as explaining was too time-consuming as I needed to spend my remaining time studying for another test or answering a second activity. I also found it hard to say no and had a people-pleaser personality. I was afraid that they would dislike me if I didn’t show my answers. Although I genuinely wanted to help them by giving them my answers so that they could pass a test, I now know better that the ends do not justify the means. I have learned to refuse when someone asks for my answers despite the risk of being disliked. When I do have free time, I could accommodate my schoolmates’ questions and difficulties as I opt to teach them rather than simply giving out answers. I didn’t want history to repeat itself and hurt another individual whenever I chose the immoral path of academic dishonesty. While it has taken me trial and error to learn from my mistakes, I am grateful that I was able to see the wrongness of my actions and was able to grow past them. Preventing immorality from happening when it is so normalized in today’s society is difficult but we have to learn the weight our decision carries and the consequences of every action we undertake. Taking responsibility for my mistakes and shortcomings made me a better individual than I was a few years before. Morality has helped me realize the importance of doing the right thing even if no one’s watching. It has taught me how indulgence in immorality would never have a happy ending unless you learn from it. As long as I am alive, I know that it is inevitable to commit mistakes but now I have the courage and wisdom to learn from them. Temptations may arrive but I now know that I could overcome them through morality and faith. From now on, I would continue to embody the bible verse, 2 Peter 1:5, “For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge.”
