Objectives: To introduce you to the scientific study of the ocean, so that you will have a better appreciation for its role as part of the entire earth/ocean/atmosphere ecosystem, and how it influences our lives. In addition, this course seeks to provide you with an understanding of the scientific process and the role of technology in supporting scientific study.
Course Web Site: We will use the FSU Blackboard system (Bb) available from: http://campus.fsu.edu. The Course Library has “reader” files you can install on your computer so you can read Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. You’ll also find the BBC Blue Planet videos, PowerPoint slide shows, and Animations for each chapter.
Text: A.P. Trujillo and H.V. Thurman, Essentials of Oceanography: 10 th^ edition The 9 th^ edition textbook or workbook are not acceptable substitutes. Softcover Textbook bundled with Pearson Access code: ISBN-13: 9780558917319 (FSU Bookstore) 3-hole drilled textbook bundled with Pearson Access Code: ISBN-13: 9780558917326 (FSU Bookstore) Softcover Textbook without Access Code: ISBN-13: 9780321668127 (available new and used from outside sources) Workbook of Homework Questions: ISBN-13: 9780558837730 (FSU Bookstore) Both the Textbook and the Workbook are required. If you buy a textbook (new or used) without the Pearson Access Code, you can purchase a code which will give you access to some enhanced content from the publisher. The Pearson Access Code costs $30.00, and is not required for this course. You can also buy access to the electronic textbook for $93.85. While the “e-textbook” is a little cheaper than the hardcopy textbook, it is easier to complete the homework sets if you have a hard copy of the textbook. If you want to buy the Pearson Access Code or the e-textbook access, go to the MyGeosciencePlaces link on the course website and follow the procedure to purchase access.
First Day Attendance Policy: The First Day Attendance procedure: Login in to campus.fsu.edu. Go to the course Bb site (ELEMENTRY OCEANGRPHY (OCE1001.sp12.web_cohort1). Click on Student Tools (on the left panel). Scroll down and click on the First Day Attendance Tool. Enter the passcode: “online OCE1001” (without the quote marks), then Submit. The First Day Attendance Tool will be open from 12:00AM Wednesday Jan. 3, 2012 until 8:00AM Thursday Jan. 5,
2012. If you have any difficulty using the First Day Attendance Tool, and you do not want to be dropped, you must send an email to your TA before 8:00AM on Thursday Jan. 5, 2012. After that time (8:00AM, Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012), anyone who has not used the First Day Attendance Tool or sent an email to their TA will be dropped from the course.
You must keep up with the chapter readings and homework sets according to the schedule, since the exams rely on your knowledge of that material. Videos and extra web-based information will be made available throughout the course, so
you will need to log in to the web site frequently to check for the latest information. Announcements will also be posted on the web site, and automatically emailed to all students. You should check the course web site and your email every 1- 2 days for course announcements.
University Attendance Policy: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
Academic Honor Policy: You are bound by the FSU Academic Honor Code in the FSU Student Handbook. Summarized briefly, you have the responsibility to (1) uphold the highest standards of academic integrity in your work, (2) refuse to tolerate violations of academic integrity in the University community, and (3) foster a high sense of integrity and social responsibility on the part of the University community. The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University’s expectations for the integrity of students’ academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to “... be honest and truthful and... [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University.” (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at http://dof.fsu.edu/honorpolicy.htm.)
Americans With Disabilities Act: Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should: (1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center; and (2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type. This should be done during the first week of class. Students with disabilities can be authorized to take their tests at the SDRC; you must complete the required forms two weeks prior to the first exam to request this service. This syllabus and other class materials are available in alternative format upon request. with your scores up to that point you can submit it without answering any questions. You can always try to improve your grade by taking the Final Exam. There is no risk in taking the Final Exam. If it ends up being your lowest score, that is the score we will drop. If it is higher than one of your other exam scores, we’ll keep it and drop the lowest score.
