How do the informatics skills you are now developing/expanding upon and validating help you meet current informatics skills levels? Did the TANIC self-assessment change your impression of your current informatics skill levels? The health care system is always changing, and with the evolution of technology, the healthcare delivery system will have to keep up. The integration go nursing informatics helps to do this, while supporting nursing practice and knowledge management. I think that one of the most important component of informatics is knowledge. Knowing what to do with the information provided is key, because anyone can be taught how to operate a computer. Informatics knowledge competencies are the recognition of the use or importance of nursing data for improving practice (Darvish et al., 2014). Computerized monitoring systems can facilitate a nursing duty but it cannot perform the task or critically think. For example, a patient who is scheduled for surgery tomorrow would probably have any anticoagulants held. The patients MAR would not flag that unless the
provider put the order in to hold the medication. The nurse would critically think and question the administration of that particular medication. It is the nurses responsibility to determine the limitations and reliability of the computerized system. The TIGER Initiative came about with the objective to prepare clinicians to be capable of using technology and informatics to improve the delivery of healthcare. The pre assessment was a great way to start the course; by opening our eyes to see how we use informatics in our current practice. The assessment was helpful to see the area for improvement.
