Topic: Nurse Burnout
Problem: Increased incidence of missed
breaks and burnout signs/symptoms
*COVID-19 = decreased job satisfaction &
increased occupational burnout (Scholtz et.al.,
2019)
*staffing shortage, overworked staff (Soto-
Rubio et al., 2020)
*prolonged stressful work environment and
missed breaks (Scholtz et al., 2019; Soto-Rubio
et al.,
PICOT Question: Among multidisciplinary
breast cancer nursing staff, will a daily 10-minute
mindfulness break, increase job satisfaction and
and decreased burnout signs/symptoms, in four
weeks?
SETTING: Multidisciplinary breast
center comprised of physicians, nurses, radiology
technicians, and administrative staff.
PROJECT INTERVENTION MILESTONES:
Educate staff on mindfulness
practices/quality improvement project
Distribute pre-intervention survey to evaluate baseline
job satisfaction and burnout
Implement a ten-minute mindfulness break every
workday for four weeks
Distribute post-intervention survey to evaluate
effectiveness of the mindfulness intervention on job
satisfaction and burnout
Disseminate results
Missing breaks throughout the workday can lead to
increased stress and burnout, negatively impacting job
satisfaction and resulting in staff turnover (Scholz et
al., 2019; Soto-Rubio et al., 2020).
Mindfulness interventions are proven to help prevent
burnout, decrease stress, and improve job satisfaction
(Ghawadra et al., 2020; Lin et al., 2020; Monroe et
al., 2020).
Research has shown employers could benefit from
supporting mindfulness in the workplace and with
minimal budgetary impacts (Monroe et al., 2020;
Van der Riet et al., 2018).
