Herd work 1pt penalties - correct answer - (Miss) Loss of working advantage. When
horse goes by or misses to the degree that he loses his position to maintain control
of the cow
- Noise directed by the contestant toward the cattle. 1pt each time.
- Working out of position. The position of the horse in relation to the cow being
worked, being either too long or too short while working to control the cow.
- Toe, foot, or stirrup on shoulder (of the horse). 1pt each time.
Herd work 3pt penalties - correct answer - Hot quit. Contestant may only quit an
animal when it is obviously stopped, obviously turned away, or obviously behind the
turn back horses who are behind the timeline.
- Cattle picked up, running into or scattering the herd.
- Failure to make a deep cut.
- Back fence. Penalty for each time the back fence stops or turns the cow within one
step, or 3 feet, of the fence.
Herd work 5pt penalties - correct answer - Horse quitting a cow. When the horse
refuses to stop or turn around with the cow.
- Losing a cow.
- Changing cattle after a specific commitment
- Failure to separate a single animal after leaving the herd
- Blatant disobedience defined as kicking, biting, bucking, rearing, stroking, or
obviously insubordinate.
- Spurring or hitting in front of the cinch at any time.
Herd work 0 score - correct answer - Horse turns tail.
- Using two hands on the reins in a bridle.
- Fingers between the reins in a bridle.
- Illegal equipment.

  • Scotching or anticipating a stop
  • Over or under spinning up to 1/4 turn
  • Excessive whipping or spurring
  • When the cows head breaks the plane of the one point marker
  • Changing sides of arena to turn cow (1pt each time)
  • For each link horse runs past cow. A length is one horse length of daylight between the cow's head and the top of the horses tail.
  • Working out of position
  • Slipping a rein
  • Failure to drive cow past middle marker on first run down the fence
  • Excessive whipping, spurring, or hollering Cow work 2pt penalties - correct answer - Going around the corner of the arena before turning the cow (When the cow's head breaks the plane of the two-point penalty marker)
  • When working a cow in the open field and the cow gets within 3 feet from the end fence before being turned. Applies when going from one end of the arena to the other. Cow work 3pt penalties - correct answer - Exhausting or overworking the cow before circling
  • Hanging up on the fence (Refusing to turn) Cow work 5pt penalties - correct answer - Not getting one turn each way (5 points each way)
  • Spurring or hitting in front of the cinch it anytime
  • Blatant disobedience defined as kicking, biting, bucking, rearing, striking, or obviously insubordinate Cow work 0 score - correct answer - Turn tail
  • Using two hands on the reins in a bridle or two rein class
  • Fingers between the reins in a bridle class, except the two rein class
  • Balking
  • Extremely out-of-control. Any horse that is out of control while working the cow and thus endangering the rider
  • Bloody mouth
  • Illegal equipment
  • Leaving the work area before the pattern or work is complete
  • Fall of horse or rider
  • Schooling of the horse between the rein and cow work when the cow work immediately follows rein work
  • Schooling of the horse between cows if a new cow is awarded
  • If a rider hits or kicks the animal being worked, with the romal or reins in an abusive manner
  • Improper western attire
  • Failure to work in the proper working order Cow work N-E - correct answer - Failure of an exhibitor to attempt to complete the work Cow work no score - correct answer - Abuse
