COPD Simulation Activity
1. COPD is disease in which the patients have emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The patient’s
alveoli become destroyed which leads the air sacs to lose their elasticity and become stretched
out (Mayo Foundation 2017). When the patient’s lungs become stretched out and it becomes
harder for the patient to breath. This causes the patient to have a hard time breathing out carbon
dioxide and have hard time getting oxygen in. The patient’s bronchi also become inflamed
which causes the patient to have a hard time dislodging mucus from their chest and this leads to
the patient having a hard time breathing as well (ATI Nursing Education 2016). Some signs and
symptoms of COPD are wheezing, shortness of breath, patient has a barrel chest, coughing,
cyanosis, and mucus build up (Mayo Foundation 2017).
2. Some of the risk factors that are associated with COPD are both environmental and physical.
One environmental risk factor would be if the person had been exposed to air pollution. A
physical risk factor if the patient is Alpha-antitrypsin deficient. However, one the highest risk
factors for this disease is if the patient smokes cigarettes; a modifiable factor (ATI Nursing
Education 2016).
3. The patient would be encouraged to change some of their behaviors such as ceasing
smoking and using protective equipment when its necessary during their daily lives. Another
way the patient can manage their COPD is through keeping update on their vaccinations such
as the flu and pneumonia (ATI Nursing Education 2016). Patient would also be encouraged to
take their medications such as their inhalers and their anti-inflammatories.

  1. Some diagnostic tests that are used COPD are chest x-ray, pulse oximetry, antitrypsin level tests, and pulmonary function tests. A chest x-ray is used by physicians to view the patient’s internal structure of the chest. This test will allow the observer to see that the alveoli have been hyperinflated and that the diaphragm is flat Another diagnostic procedure that is used is the pulse oximetry which measure the oxygen levels of the patient, typically for a COPD patient is in lower than normal range. Antitrypsin level tests are another helpful diagnostic test that can be used in diagnosing COPD. The AAT level test is used to test the level of the enzyme AAT, this enzyme is important in preventing other enzyme from attacking the lung tissues This test is helpful since a risk factor of COPD is being deficient in AAT. Pulmonary function tests can be used to categorize the severity of the COPD that the patient has. One of these function tests involves measuring the forced expiratory volume to the forced vital capacity, comparing these two allows the patient to categorized (ATI Nursing Education 2016).
  2. Albuterol is used for prevention of bronchospasms in patients that have COPD. Some adverse effects of Albuterol include anxiety, bronchospasms, arrhythmias, sweating and flushing. Albuterol has interactions with drugs such as aminophylline, digoxin, insulin, and linezolid. So, the patient needs to be aware of the drug to drug interactions prior to taking the Albuterol. Patients should always report to their doctor if symptoms are getting worse and not exceed the recommended daily dose. (KARCH, A. M. 2018). Sulo-medrol is used in the treatment inflammation, immunosuppression and allergies. It does this by suppressing the normal immune response and decrease inflammation. Its contraindicated with patients that have active infections, women that are lactating, and the use of live vaccines. Some adverse effects of Sulo-medrol are hypertension, euphoria, aneroxia, nausea, decreased wound
