The main reason is that I want to be challenged and learn new things every day. I know that in a med surg unit you need to be on your toes and have to use your critical thinking skills to help care for your patients. I think that this type of nursing would help me grow as a new graduate nurse and learn a variety of skills. I beleive that I will get the best experience on a med surg unit as a new graduate. I will be able to use all of the skills that I have learned. In the nursing profession, you deal with many aspects of patient care, and I like the variety in the routine and every day is different. There are also so many opportunities available with nursing which can help me grow and continue to expand my education! My mom and sister are nurses, so I have always been so interested and amazed at what they do! My mom works for the Evergreens which is a long-term care facility, so I grew up volunteering there are visiting residents who do not get many visitors. I heard so many amazing stories and learned so much about myself and others from those experiences. It was those visits with the many residents at the Evergreens and my mom's hard work that made me so passionate about joining the nursing profession. What are your interested fields - answer- There are just so many options with nursing, it is hard to decide what I like the best. What do you do for self care? - answer- · Whenever I get overwhelmed and need to do something to calm myself down, I usually exercise. When it is nice out I also LOVE being outside whether it is just going for a walk with my friends or my dog! What is teamwork and when was a time you used it - answer- · I think nursing is a career where teamwork is super important. Nurses have to work together all of the time. There will be times when you can't get everything done that is needed and you will need a helping hand. There may also be a time when you are uncertain of what to do next and it is important to get input from other nurses. There will be times that a nurse needs to work independently to build the trust in
breathing while my nurse was preparing to discharge her. The nurse was getting the necessary materials ready for the patient out of the room when I grew concerned. I calmly asked the patient if she was having difficulty breathing and went and got a pulse ox to assess her oxygen level. It was 88% so I noticed she was not stable enough to be getting discharged, so I quickly and calmly told my nurse the result. After the nurse returned, I did a full set of vital signs and the nurse called the doctor using SBAR and it turned out to be a pneumothorax and the client was not ready to be discharged. I stayed calm so they patient wouldn't grow more anxious which helped with the patient's condition and the nurse was grateful I found her right when I noticed a concerning vital sign. My experience - answer- My first clinical experience was at Pocopson nursing home in West Chester for long-term care. Then I went to Chester county hospital for my med surge unit. I was at the VA Medical Center in Coatesville PA for my mental health rotation. Paoli hospital for maternity and I went to DuPont for pediatrics. I also had another med surge rotation on the telemetry stroke unit at Riddle hospital. Last summer I was at Cooper on their oncology unit as a nurse extern. I have documented my findings, given report, helped patients ambulate, morning care, and given medications including injections, oral, g- tube, and breathing treatments, A time you solved a problem - answer- · I was at my first clinical rotation at Pocopson which is a long-term care facility. My patient was complaining of pain during one of my clinicals. My nurse was occupied with another patient, so I stayed with the patient in pain and tried to help comfort her and reassure her that the nurse will be shortly to help her. The patient seemed to relax when she realized she wasn't alone and when I distracted her. I helped her adjust the way she was lying to provide more comfort and immediately got the nurse when I saw her discomfort wasn't improving. It's understandable that nurses get very busy, but it's also very important to treat the patient's pain before it gets too severe! Bedside care is so important and really does make a difference. The nurses at this long term care facility seemed over worked so I tried my best to always help when I could. strengths - answer- · I am very motivated and capable nursing student and I love interacting with patients. I will be able to build relationships. I have had some experience with my clinicals that will definitely benefit me if I get this opportunity to be a part of Virtua. I have no problem communicating with other members of staff to achieve the best patient care. I think I would be an excellent asset to your team.
Weakness - answer- I am overcritical of myself. I often think about decisions I have made either good or bad and think of ways that I could have changed what I have done and what I could have done better. I will overthink something that really isn't significant but seems like it is important to me. I always think about the different ways that I should have gone about my approach. Something about yourself that we wouldn't know about you outside of the resume - answer- · I am very into self-care and exercising. Something that makes you stand out - answer- · This past summer I did an externship at Cooper on their oncology unit. This was an amazing experience and my critical thinking and problem- solving skills greatly increased. I was able to follow a nurse full time, and this allowed me to understand what the day of a nurse truly entails. I was able to visit their outpatient cancer center across the street which is known as MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. This gave my both inpatient but also outpatient experience. I was able to shadow a different floor for a day, so I chose to observe their ICU. This gave my insight on how critical care nurses work and I feel my skills, knowledge, and nursing understanding enhanced greatly from my experiences last summer. What am I proud of myself for? - answer- · Being dedicated to my nursing program and focusing on it. Nursing school had a lot of bumps in the road and it took me a while to figure out how to study. There were times when I felt defeated, but I never gave up. When I was balancing nursing school and Soccer there were days, I felt drained and was unable to give all my energy and focus to both aspects of my life. I made the difficult decision to prioritize my schoolwork and step away from the soccer team that was considered my family. This was a hard decision, but I am proud of myself for making the right choice and even though I loved soccer I knew school is always priority. I ended up also changing the way I studied, found a group of friends to support each other and I am proud to say I graduated on Sunday.
a time you went above and beyond for someone - answer- · There was a younger patient at my experience at Cooper last summer who had a new diagnosis of cancer. She seemed very down and withdrawn, and I decided to sit in the room with her to offer support. I asked her if she had any family members, she would want to call, and she seemed sad by my question. She stated all she wanted to do was see her two children but did not want to scare them by bringing them to the hospital and seeing her with all the scary medical equipment. I offered her the idea to facetime them whenever she was feeling sad since they will always want to hear from their mom. I then made it a point even if my nurse wasn't assigned to her to stop in every day I was there and spend time with her. I was there during her first chemo infusion and somedays for my lunch break I would just sit and talk with her or walk beside her during her laps in the hallways. She always seemed to brighten up when I came around and she told me how much she appreciated my time since she always thought healthcare workers were too busy to go out of their way to make time for patients this much. Personal accountability for a conflict and contact was made with the individual - answer- · One time as a waitress I made a mistake which I knew confronting my boss would result in my getting reprimanded, but I knew it was more important to speak up. I had a very busy night with many tables I was responsible for. I had a customer who was with their family who requested their food be gluten free since our restaurant had a separate gluten free menu. When writing their meals on the slip I did not include the one meal was gluten free and did not realize until after the meal was made that I did not include the gluten free. When it was time to bring the meals to the family, I brought back the one individual to the chef and had to explain my mistake to my boss and the customer who then had to wait for their food to be done right while their family members ate. I brought gluten free bread to the table while they waited and knew my actions made them upset and frustrated but I knew holding the food back and admitting my mistake was the right thing to do for their health. a time you adapted to change - answer- · During the past two months I had to completely change my way of living and studying due to the pandemic occurring. I had to move home from school, transition to online classes and clinical, and change my way of living completely. I believe change is a way of life and situations such as the corona virus are going to just make people stronger. I was very upset about not having my nursing pinning and graduation after all my hard work the past 4 years. I just always remember this doesn't hinder my ability to become a great nurse and remember all the individuals my age going through the same situation remembering I'm not alone and I am just thankful for my family and friend's health.
questions - answer- What would a typical day be like if I was on the Med Surg floor at Virtua and how many patients would I have? How long would orientation be where I would be working with my preceptor? How will you handle workplace stress? - answer- · I find clear communication between myself and colleagues about when I need help will help me handle stress. I will also find a good balance between work and personal time to unsure I don't get too stressed and I will use coping mechanisms to help manage my stress at work. A time a patient was not happy with your care - answer- I had a patient last summer on the Cooper oncology unit who was an older man becoming recently incontinent. He was unhappy with the fact that I had to come in and check on him to ensure he was in dry clothes to prevent possible complications. He would yell at me when I entered the room and did not like the fact that I had to change and bathe him since he was no stable enough to clean himself. I just made sure I was performing safe and competent care in my scope of practice and understood this is a very frustrating time for him and wanted to make this hospital stay as comfortable as possible for the patient. Even though he did not agree with my care and how I would need to check to see if he went to the bathroom I know this was the best care for the patients health so I tried my best to make the patient as independent as possible and allowed him to clean the areas and perform the ADLs he was able to perform.
