CASE STUDY

MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH BY MRS ZIMBA TO EMPLOYEES DURING THE LABOUR

DAY CELEBRATIONS AT THE HEROES STADIUM

Mrs. Zimba is a household name among various labour movements all over the world. She has exceptional skills in employee counselling and is also very famous in motivational speaking. She has attended and addressed various employee forums all over the world. Some of her famous speeches have addressed various issues among employees, such as personality, attitudes, values, communication, conflict resolution, among other issues.

Mrs. Zimba recently received an invitation from the Minister of Labour of the Republic of Zambia, to address employees during the Labour day celebrations at the Heroes stadium in Lusaka. This time round, she did not give a lengthy speech. She was short and precise instead. This is because she was only allowed 30 minutes to address the employees.

She began by telling employees that each and every employee was unique. She went ahead to tell them that all human beings were fearfully and wonderfully created by God, in his own image. She was also quick to state that all human beings were equal in the eyes of God. She began her speech in this manner because she wanted to focus on employee personality. She said that human beings had different personalities because they were unique. She however said that these differences in personality were determined by certain factors which were beyond the control of human beings. She assured employees that despite their differences in personality, it was possible for employees to work together in harmony in order to achieve organizational goals.

As she continued addressing the gathering, she was able to psychologically read the different components of attitudes of these employees. She wondered how the group

QUESTION ONE

a). Mrs. Zimba said that differences in personality were determined by certain factors which were beyond the control of human beings. Explain this state in detail, giving relevant examples. [6 Marks]

b). As she addressed the gathering, she was able to psychologically read the different components of attitudes of these employees. Discuss these components using relevant examples. [6 Marks]

c). She mentioned FIVE types of values that employees needed to have, to enable them live well in the society. Using relevant examples, discuss these values. [10 Marks]

d). One important issue which Mrs. Zimba did not want to end her speech without mentioning was on the importance of communication in organizations. Why did Mrs. Zimba think that communication was important in organizations? [8 Marks]

e). Mrs. Zimba said that organizations should derive strategies to manage conflicts in organizations. Discuss this statement using relevant examples. [10 Marks]

QUESTION TWO

Mrs. Atoko is a former employee of the Zanaco Bank. She worked for this particular bank during the pre-independence period. She still maintained contacts with her colleagues at this bank even after quitting the bank. She recently paid a courtesy call to the manager of the bank. She was amazed by the changes that had taken place at the bank. She could not imagine that this was the same bank that she once worked for more than fifty (50) years ago. The bank manager agreed with her that the bank had really transformed over a period of time. He attributed this transformation to certain external and internal forces which created the need for change in the operations of the bank.

Required: Using the support of relevant examples, discuss FIVE possible external forces and FIVE possible internal forces that may have created the need for change at Zanaco Bank. [Total 20 Marks]

QUESTION THREE

Mr. Ching Chung is the Chief Executive Officer of Solwezi Mining Company. He is an expatriate from China. Solwezi Mining Company deals in mining and excavation activities. It has a workforce of 6000 employees. In the recent past, employees of Solwezi Mining Company have raised concerns with regards to poor communication in the company. Mr. Ching Chung has on several occasions tried to address employees of Solwezi Mining Company about certain official matters affecting the company and employees. Employees do not seem to get his message.
