SECTION A Physical Oceanography

  1. With particular reference to changes in the ocean and coupling with feedback mechanisms, describe how tectonic activities can alter the earths climate. and Describe what is meant by climate sensitivity and how this is determined for a variable such as global surface temperature. What is the role of (i) the oceans heat capacity and (ii) feedbacks, in the transient response to a change in radiative forcing?
  2. Describe the process of Mode Water formation in the North Atlantic sub-polar gyre and what factors may affect the characteristics of the deep water formed. and Briefly describe the Delayed Oscillator theory for the El Nino southern oscillation. SECTION B Marine Microbiology
  3. Explain how physical oceanographic conditions might influence the occurrence of harmful algal blooms off the south and southwest coasts of Ireland.
  4. How do fronts influence the ecology of phytoplankton in Irish coastal waters during the summertime.
  5. Discuss the importance of thinking on the micro-as well as the macro-scale when studying microbial activity in the ocean.
  6. Discuss the advantages and limitations of nucleic-acid based methods in the context of marine microbial ecology. How might these limitations be overcome?
  7. Write an essay on marine viruses and their importance in the global ecosystem. SECTION C Marine Botany
  8. Describe the main mangrove plant communities and the principal environmental factors that affect them.
  9. Give a detailed account of Irish salt marsh systems and describe the factors that cause regional differences.
