Controlling Idea: The Euro emission standard and its applications

Euro emission standard is a regulation created by European Union. Its function is to
regulate and reduce emission, commonly applied for land vehicles. Back in 1992, European Union
issued a regulation for gasoline engine vehicles to be equipped with catalyst devices, which later
known as Euro I standard. Several years later, in 1996, the Euro II standard is applied, limiting the
amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission
both for petrol vehicles and diesel vehicles. The regulation is constantly updated, resulting in
advanced development of emission-reducing technologies such as exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), etc. The current euro emission standard is Euro VI,
which has been applied since 2016. This regulation became a huge breakthrough regarding air
pollution and environmental issues. Even though the regulation is made for European Union
countries, these standards are applied in most countries.
