Welcome to the School of Media and Communication. The Staff Induction Guide is designed to help you settle into your new role quickly and smoothly. It is a local guide and should be used in conjunction with other broader RMIT resources. The School of Media and Communication aims to produce graduates who will respond creatively to the challenges of a rapidly changing international, media-driven environment. Media and Communication has strong links with industry, and responds to ongoing change brought about by technology and convergence. The School is positioned as a major contributor and leader of the debate within media driven industries.
The School delivers the full spectrum of educational programs from certificate to PhD: industry training, short courses, vocational education, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Some programs have flexible delivery options for on-line learning and the School has a significant presence in international markets onshore and offshore. The School which comprises 225 core staff - including 170 academic and teaching staff, nearly 600 sessional teaching staff, and 6400 students (head count) - is a diverse, international group of dedicated people developing knowledge relevant to multiple social contexts.

Staff Central and Employee Self Service (ESS) are the two human resources technology platforms used to manage and maintain employee information. RMIT will incrementally transition all functions from ESS to Staff Central Staff Central and Employee Self Service (ESS)

Employee Self Service (ESS) ESS
The Employee Self Service (ESS) facility provides access for staff to view, submit some employment related payment claims, and in some cases update staff data in the University’s SAP system.

Compliance Education - online training modules
RMIT is committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of its staff. We must also comply with a range of statutory requirements. Training on these important matters is provided via a number of online training modules which staff are required to complete when they commence at RMIT, then every 2 years as a refresher. Compliance Education New staff are required to complete these modules in their first month of employment (staff login required)

How do I…make a claim for staff expenses reimbursement? For expenses incurred by staff on behalf of RMIT University, and for staff development/travel reimbursements please download the staff reimbursement form, then obtain approval from your Deputy Dean or supervisor and forward with all relevant receipts to the School Finance office building 9.4.05 Staff Reimbursement form
How do I…get keys to my office?
If you need an office key to be issued please visit your School Reception office (bldg 9 or bldg 94) and ask for Dominic Hogan (ext. 55260) Facilities Officer to arrange it for you.
How do I…request a new Security Access Card?
RMIT Security Access Cards are required for access to a number of School locations. To request an Access Card download Security Access Card Request form Once you have supervisor approval take to your nearest Reception office in building 9 or 94 for authorisation. Take the authorised form to the Security Control Room in bldg 14 level 3 ground floor, entrance is on Franklin Street. Security staff can arrange a new card and access for you on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 10.00am - 12.00pm or 1.00pm – 3.00pm.

RMIT encourages staff to publish individual profile information on the RMIT website as a means of capturing research, scholarship, professional and industry activity. Staff stationery can be requested by ordering via your School Reception office. Please select products required from the catalogue and advise the Reception staff.

Incoming and outgoing mail within the School will be processed for you at your School Reception office. If you are continuing/fixed-term staff and have not yet been allocated a mailbox, please notify your Reception office and you will be assigned one.

Who are the… Technical Services professional staff?
The School operates an extensive Technical Services area providing audio and video production equipment, photographic equipment and specialist audio-visual studios and facilities for students and staff within the School. Only School of Media and Communication students and staff are permitted to use the equipment and facilities.
