PERSONAL ESSAY
THE LOCKDOWN
Lockdown has been a period of uncertainty, fear and anxiety. The world we once knew was swept away
by the coronavirus pandemic. Streets once bustling with people are now eerily silent, the skies are
empty of airplanes, and most stores have closed their doors. I am no longer able to visit my favorite
restaurants, cafes or parks.
During the lockdown, I felt trapped, disconnected, and lonely. I struggled with my mental health, trying
to keep up with the monotony of each day. But through all this, I learned a valuable lesson - the power of
resilience.
Simple things like going for walks around my neighborhood, solving puzzles, and reading were enjoyable
to me. Virtually, I reconnected with family and friends, sharing stories, engaging in games, and even
hosting movie evenings. We also shared our feelings over the lockdown and provided one another with
support during this trying moment.
In addition, I developed brand-new interests in things like baking, gardening, and meditation. I even
mastered the art of baking sourdough bread. I felt inspired, delighted, and proud after these minor
victories.
Simple activities like reading books, playing crossword puzzles, and going for neighborhood walks gave
me joy. Virtually, I got in touch with my family and friends again, sharing stories, having game evenings,
and even watching movies together. We also discussed how the lockdown affected us and provided one
another with support throughout this trying time.
I also developed new interests, such as a love for baking, gardening, and meditation. I even mastered
making sourdough bread from scratch. These minor triumphs gave me cause for pride, joy, and
motivation.
The best part of my lockdown, though, was seeing how individuals banded together to help one another.
These individuals, from front-line healthcare providers to delivery drivers and grocery shop employees,
have put their personal safety in danger to maintain society. The neighbors offered to watch the kids,
give meals, and even help with the groceries. It served as a reminder to me that even in trying
circumstances, individuals can be kind, compassionate, and generous.
Lockdown has been an eye-opening event for me, to sum up. It has been difficult, but it has given me
invaluable life lessons. It has aided me in finding new interests and passions, reestablishing relationships
with loved ones, and—most importantly—demonstrating to me that kindness and empathy are never
out of place, even in trying circumstances.
