Physical Agent Modalities (PAMS)
PAMS - procedures and treatment interventions that use light, sound, water, temperature, and
electricity to modify client factors that limit occupational performance
are considered a preparatory method for the therapeutic use of occupations or purposeful activities
PAMS Regulation - local, state, and national levels
practitioner must demonstrate competence to administer PAMS
Cryotherapy - cools tissues to 1-2 cm depth
includes ice massage, ice, cold packs, cool water immersions and whirlpool
can help with pain relief, swelling, edema
AVOID use with clients w/impaired circulation, peripheral vascular disease, hypersensitivity to cold,
impaired sensation, open wounds or infections
Thermotherapy - heats tissue 1-2 cm depth
methods include heat packs, whirlpools, fluidotherapy, contrast baths and paraffin baths
helps to increase blood flow, rate of cell metabolism, inflammation, muscle contraction, O2
consumption. Decrease muscle spasms and pain.
AVOID use with clients w/acute inflammation, edema, sensory impairment, cancer, blood clot, infection,
cardiac problems and impaired cognition
Ultrasound - Sound waves with frequencies above the normal human range of hearing

PAMS - procedures and treatment interventions that use light, sound, water, temperature, and electricity to modify client factors that limit occupational performance are considered a preparatory method for the therapeutic use of occupations or purposeful activities PAMS Regulation - local, state, and national levels practitioner must demonstrate competence to administer PAMS Cryotherapy - cools tissues to 1-2 cm depth includes ice massage, ice, cold packs, cool water immersions and whirlpool can help with pain relief, swelling, edema AVOID use with clients w/impaired circulation, peripheral vascular disease, hypersensitivity to cold, impaired sensation, open wounds or infections Thermotherapy - heats tissue 1-2 cm depth methods include heat packs, whirlpools, fluidotherapy, contrast baths and paraffin baths helps to increase blood flow, rate of cell metabolism, inflammation, muscle contraction, O consumption. Decrease muscle spasms and pain. AVOID use with clients w/acute inflammation, edema, sensory impairment, cancer, blood clot, infection, cardiac problems and impaired cognition Ultrasound - Sound waves with frequencies above the normal human range of hearing

heats tissue 1-5 cm in depth thermal and non thermal settings thermal helps with tissue extensibility, and blood flow, decrease joint stiffness, muscle spasms and chronic inflammation non thermal helps increase protein synthesis, bone healing and decrease inflammation DO NOT USE with clients w/active cancer, pregnant or have a pacemaker/bleeding/infection. No use with blood clots, growth plates of bones. Phonophoresis - the use of ultrasound to promote absorption of topically applied medication to accelerate tissue repair and decrease inflammation. Electrical Stimulation - Passage of an electrical current from the uninsulated tip of an electrode through tissue, resulting in changes in the electrical activity of the tissue. NMES, TENS, iontophoresis DO NOT USE over pacemaker, pregnant uterus, or eyes. DO NOT USE with clients with epilepsy, cancer, infection, decreased sensation, or cardiac disease. Low-level laser and light therapy - 1. Methods include light emitting diodes, super luminous diodes, and low-level laser diodes.

  1. Effects on the client include decreased pain, edema, and inflammation; increased wound healing; and decreased scar tissue DO NOT USE over vagus nerve, carotid sinus, pregnant uterus, eyes, endocrine glands or with clients with cancer or infection
