PHYSICAL EDUCATION
“Swimming”
Grade 11 STEM Reviewer
Sports
- Are all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organized participation, aim to
use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some
cases, the spectators.
Importance:
1. Improve physical ability
2. Improve skills
3. Provide entertainment to participants and spectators
Recreational and Competitive Swimming
Swimming – can be both recreational sport and a competitive sport
- provides a way of exercising mazy parts of the body and keeping in optimum physical health
- A sport that everyone of any age can do
- Is recommended to limit the chances of some medical conditions
- Also a therapy after some surgeries
“Fitness Components”
Cardio-vascular endurance – must need
The ability to deliver oxygen, nutrients and remove waste products is run by the cardiovascular system
Is the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen-rich blood to the working muscle tissues, and the ability of
the muscles to use oxygen to produce energy for movement
An activity requiring cardiovascular endurance is anything that lasts over ten minutes and requires large
amounts of oxygen and may burn a high amount of calories
Swimming requires high cardiovascular endurance because it is a sustained activity, using large muscle groups
and lasts 30-60 minutes
Muscular endurance – high need
Is being able to move and perform an action for a long period of time, without feeling fatigue
Swimming needs muscular endurance because of the properties of water
Strength – medium need
The extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance
Flexibility – medium need
The range of motion of your joints or the ability of your joints to move freely
Power – medium need
The ability to exert maximum muscular contraction instantly in an explosive burst of movements
Agility – high need
Is the ability to move and change direction and position of the body quickly and effectively from one position to
another
Swimming needs agility because you must keep your body level in the water. You must keep your hips and
shoulders level and a streamlined position otherwise you will not be able to increase your speed and efficiently
cut through the water
Balance – medium need
Is the ability to stay upright or stay in control of body movement, and coordination is the ability to move two or
more body parts under control, smoothly and efficiently
Coordination – high need
Is the ability to move two or more body parts under control, smoothly and efficiently
Extremely needed when swimming. Hand-Eye coordination is needed in order to stay in your lane and swim
straight. You need to know when to stop and whether the end of the lane is in front of you
Reaction time – low need
Is the ability to respond quickly to a stimulus. It important in many sports and day to day activities, though it is
not often measured
Components of Fitness
Endurance – oxygen delivery
Stamina – energy utilization
Strength – force exertion
Flexibility – range of motion
Power – explosiveness
Speed – time minimization
Coordination – movement integration
Agility – movement control
