  1. Drugs are given 3 broad types of names. Identify these names, their purpose and give a specific drug example of each (30%). Describe the various ways in which drugs can act at receptor targets, illustrating your answer with diagrams and specific drug examples (70%).
  2. Compare and contrast graded and quantal dose responses, using graphs and specific drug examples (50%). Define the term “therapeutic index” and state how this is calculated. Using specific drug examples, explain the usefulness of this measurement (50%).
  3. Outline the physiological function of the autonomic nervous system (35%). Giving drug examples, describe how activation of autonomic receptors using agonist drugs can be used for therapeutic gain in four clinical conditions (65%).
  4. With the aid of diagrams and giving specific drug examples, describe the different mechanisms by which drugs can affect cholinergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission.
  5. Write an essay on drug metabolism including the different types of reactions & enzymes involved, giving drug examples for each type.
  6. Define the term pharmacokinetics. Explain the following terms with the aid of diagrams and/or equations: Bioavailability, Half-life, Plasma Protein Binding, Ionization constant.
  7. With respect to drugs of abuse, define tolerance and dependence (20%). Giving specific drug examples, describe the characteristics of each (80%).
  8. Describe the main types of randomised, controlled, clinical trials and methods of randomisation.
