SEMESTER 2 EXAMINATIONS 2011
IBERS (BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES)
BS34210 ENVIRONMENTAL ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY
TIME ALLOWED: TWO HOURS
ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS, EACH IN A SEPARATE ANSWER BOOK
1. How is the Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, adapted to living in the marine
environment?
2. Discuss the physiological problems, in the context of the external milieu, facing the
following three types of marine vertebrates using a specific NAMED example of each:
a) An iono- and osmoconformer [20%].
b) An ionoregulator and osmoconformer [40%].
c) An ionoregulator and osmoregulator [40%].
3. Review the navigational strategies underpinning animal migration and homing.
4. Using supporting evidence from different phyla review the prediction that invaginated
air breathing out competed other mechanism(s) of breathing in the terrestrial
environment.
5. Compare and contrast how invertebrates and vertebrates exploit avoidance, tolerance
and regulation strategies to respond to cold terrestrial temperatures.
