A comprehensive overview of the concept of plate tectonics, a fundamental theory in the field of physical science. It delves into the idea of plate tectonics, the three main types of plate boundaries, and the formation of the supercontinent pangaea. The document also explores the concept of the ring of fire, tectonic plate boundaries, and the different types of plate interactions, including divergent, convergent, and transform fault boundaries. Additionally, it presents real-life examples of these plate boundaries, such as the mid-atlantic ridge, the himalayan mountains, and the san andreas fault. This document serves as a valuable resource for students and learners interested in understanding the dynamic processes that shape our planet.

OBJECTIVESOBJECTIVES Discuss the idea of plate tectonics. Identify the three types of plate boundaries.
PRE-TEST PRE-TEST the name of a German scientist the name of the super-continent that existed millions of years ago I don't know the name of an ancient fossil
Earth's surface is made up of seven major landmasses the continents DO NOT move the continents were once joined together in a single landmass I don't know
WHAT IS PANGEA?WHAT IS PANGEA? Around 1915, a German scientist named Alfred Wegner proposed the Continental Drift Theory- which states that parts of the Earth's crust slowly drift atop a liquid core. The bases of this theory were map fit, fossil (Mesosaurus) evidence, mid oceanic ridges and continents structural similarities. He hypothesized that there was a gigantic supercontinent 200 million years ago, which he named PANGEA , meaning "All-earth". He also developed the Plate Tectonics theory. The theory stated that the earth's lithosphere is made up of individual plates that are broken down into over a dozen large and small pieces of solid rock called slab.

PLATEPLATE TECTONICS TECTONICS PARTS PARTS Plates are made of rigid LITHOSPHERE, the lithosphere is made up of the crust and the upper part of the mantle. Below the lithosphere (which makes up the tectonic plates) is the ASTHENOSPHERE.
1 2 TYPES OF TYPES OF PLATE PLATE BOUNDARIES BOUNDARIES DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES plates spread apart creating gap for the hot magma to rise and cool. The cooled magma then becomes new crust. Common along oceanic ridges. CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES plates collide (forming mountains) and destroyed as one crust dive beneath the other the process called SUBDUCTION. This process generates volcanoes. Ocean trenches are examples where Mariana trench in the Pacific Ocean is an example.

CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES the collision of the India Plate with the Eurasian Plate, creating the Himalaya Mountains , and the collision of the African Plate with the Eurasian Plate, creating the series of ranges extending from the Alps in Europe to the Zagros Mountains in Iran.
