Berkshire

  • Originated from Berkshire, England
  • Purebred breed
  • Exceptional meat quality
  • Predominatly Black w/ six points of white
  • Erect Ears
  • White (six points)
    • Tip of tail (unless docked)

    • 4 Legs (at least 3 of 4 socks)
    • NO white between base of ears and base of tail allowed
  • Known for Pork Quality Tenderness and Marbling
  • Registrations maintained by American Berkshire Association division of National Swine Registry, Lafayette, INDIANA.

Chester White

  • Developed in Chester County, Pennsylvania (PA)
  • White
    • No colored hair allowed
    • No dark skin spots larger than silver dollar
  • Droopy Ears - medium in size.
  • Known for:
    • Mothering ability
    • Durability
    • Soundness Older type Remember a difference between Chesters and Landrace is the size of their ears!

Hampshire

  • Originated from Scotland and England
  • IMPORTED from Hampshire, ENGLAND.
  • Unique color markings
  • Black w/ white belt
    • Belt covers front legs and goes around body
  • Erect ears
  • Terminal Sire Breed
  • Heavy muscled
  • Lean carcass
  • Noted for cutability

Landrace

  • Imported from Denmark
  • White
  • Large Ears droop and slant forward with its top edges nearly parallel to the bridge of a straight nose.
  • Farrow and raise large litters
  • Refine boned
  • Heavy Milkers
  • Produce Large Loins and Hams

Pietrain

  • Originate in Pietrain, Belgium
  • Medium size
  • White w/ Black Spots
  • Erect ears
  • Known for extreme muscle volume and shape
  • High propensity for stress which is related to pork quality concerns.

SPOT

  • Developed in US - INDIANA
  • Black and white
    • No red or brown spots allowed
  • Large Droopy Ears
  • Big Boned
  • Good Disposition
  • Noted for rapid growth
  • Noted as aggressive breeders
  • (formerly known as Spotted Poland Chinas, but now just SPOTS)

Yorkshires

  • Developed in Yorkshire, England
  • White
  • Erect ears.
  • Most recorded breed of swine in the United States and in Canada
  • “The Mother Breed”
    • Excel in litter size, birth and weaning weight, rebreeding interval, durability and longevity
