Tell me about yourself - answer- I'm from Fontana, Ca. Worked as a resident guest teacher for 4 years Loved teaching and working with people, but was still had a desire to work in healthcare. I'm excited about the possibility of working here because it allows me the ability to meld my experiences gained from teaching with my newly found and developing nursing skills to provide Why do you want to work here (ICU/UCSD)? - answer- When I thought about nursing, one of the places I envisioned myself working was in the ICU. I wanted to be able to provide support for patients and their families during a time of crisis. I believe my background working with children as an educator has helped prepare me for this because I often helped to support students during emotional crisis. Why do you want to be a nurse? - answer- I've always wanted to make a significant, positive impact on people's lives. This is why I found teaching to be rewarding, but I was also always drawn to the healthcare field. Nursing is a profession where I get to positively impact people's lives while working in healthcare. During my med surg 2 rotation, I actually had a patient ask for me by name. I had cared for her the week prior and now my classmate was assigned to her care, which is how she knew I was here. The charge nurse found me and told me the patient had requested I come see her. She remembered me from the prior week and she wanted me to help with her bed bath. As I student, I didn't think I had made a lasting impact on her, but to be asked for by name was something that let me know I was in the right place. What are some of your best qualities? - answer- Organization Team work Flexibility
What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? - answer- Strengths: -Flexibility: learned this from the ever-changing environment of education -Team Work: -Organization: Weaknesses: -Always want a positive outcome: -Under-estimating myself: -Time it takes to chart/document: Where do you see yourself in five years? - answer- In five years time I will want to have gotten my CCRN and heading towards management positions. By the five year mark I would like to be trained in being a charge nurse on the unit. Tell me about a time you demonstrated teamwork on the job? - answer- Helping a nurse who was busy with an admission by changing his patient's bag of fluids. Helping nurses and nursing assistance with patient care: cleaning patients, toileting, grabbing snacks/water, turning pts, etc What do you do if you don't know the answer to a patient's question? - answer- I would let the patient know that I don't have the answer to their question, but will find out. I will try to get back to them with an answer as soon as possible so that they know their questions/concerns are important to me. How well do you handle changes to your schedule/working environment? - answer- Doing what needs to be done for the team Have experience with this from teaching
How would you handle a situation where a patient needs to be persuaded to comply with treatment? - answer- Assuming this patient is alert and oriented: -this may be a case of misunderstanding, so I would want ot inquire about what their barriers to treatment are. Perhaps it's financial. Maybe they don't understand something about the treatment. -From this I can determine if it's best to have the MD come and maybe talk to them about other options. -However, at the end of the day, patients have autonomy over their own care and are free to accept or refuse treatment. What's the most rewarding thing about being a nurse? - answer- How has you background prepared you to be a nurse? - answer- How do you do self-care? - answer- Tell me about a time you felt something was unsafe and what did you do to address it? - answer- Tell me about a time you worked closely with a team. - answer- Choose a nursing sensitive indicator and provide interventions to address it. - answer- Fall prevention -freq. rounding -toileting schedule -quickly answering call lights -delegating a nursing assistant to help with ambulation/toileting if I am unavailable -Ensuring the bed/chair alarm is on
Tell me about a time when a patient's coping mechanism was not enough and what did you do. - answer- Tell me about a time you received constructive feedback and how did you respond. - answer- Did you have any experience working in health care before you became a nurse/nursing student? - answer- Working at San Antonio Regional Hospital -safety ambassador -worked with helping to ensure patients, visitors, and staff were safe through help with directions, access to the building, monitoring security cameras, and close coordination with the security team. Tell us about a time you had an error in judgement - answer- Not telling nurse about low BP (trending) in Med surg 1 What is some useful criticism you've gotten from a preceptor or clinical instructor? - answer- That I need to learn how to break away from a talkative patient. I'm someone who is empathetic and understands that sometimes when people are in the hospital this may be the only time that they have regular interactions with someone and they need that socialization. I want to be able to provide holistic care and give that to them, but I also have a duty to my other patients and colleagues who may need my help. So it's finding that balance and ultimately having to tell them that while I enjoy hearing there story, I do need to go help another patient.
