Practice with 2D Forces
Brief Introduction
Now we’ll get some analytic practice with solving problems of forces in two dimension. For
these problems construct a system schema, a free body diagram, and use Newton’s Laws to find
the missing information.
Part 1: Tension, Gravity, and Normal Forces
1. A piñata is hanging from a branch outside your house, shown in the figure below. The
piñata is fastened to the branch by two ropes. The ropes make an angle of θ1 = 30° and
θ2 =65° with the horizontal. If the tension forces in the rope are T1 = 50N and T2 =100N
respectively, how much does the piñata weigh?

Practice with 2D Forces

Brief Introduction

Now we’ll get some analytic practice with solving problems of forces in two dimension. For these problems construct a system schema, a free body diagram, and use Newton’s Laws to find the missing information.

Part 1: Tension, Gravity, and Normal Forces

  1. A piñata is hanging from a branch outside your house, shown in the figure below. The piñata is fastened to the branch by two ropes. The ropes make an angle of θ 1 = 30° and θ 2 =65° with the horizontal. If the tension forces in the rope are T 1 = 50 N and T 2 =100N respectively, how much does the piñata weigh?

  1. A boat owner pulls her boat into the dock shown, where there are six bollards to which to tie the boat. She has three ropes. She can tie the boat from the boat’s center (A) to any of the bollards (B through G) along the dotted lines shown in the diagram. The owner has tied two of her three ropes: one from A to B, and another from A to D (such that FAB = FAD). Where should she tie her 3rd^ rope?
  2. A 25 kg couch starts slipping down from rest from the top of a 2 m long ramp that is at a 20 degree angle from the ground. How much force must you apply so that the couch does not move? I Egg^ lengthramp (^) 2M (^) F Fparalley (^) Fgosin O IT sag (^9) 8m 2497314

  1. The ball launcher in a pinball machine has a spring that has a spring constant of 15 N/m. The surface that the ball moves along has an incline of 10 degrees with respect to the horizontal. If initially there was no hand pulling back on the spring, how far would the weight of the ball compress the spring?

Part 3: Challenge Problems

  1. Two blocks m 1 and m 2 are set up as seen in the figure below. Assuming that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the table is 0.25, calculate the tension in the string. I Em Les (^) ooo I g ico.mn YYYoooaom_ I'm4É
