PROJECT OVERVIEW
Your assignment is to prepare a short research paper (275–300 words) giving an overview of the history and current policies in large cities. The requirements are that the paper be presented according to the MLA documentation style and have three references. One of the three references must be from the Web. You will prepare a paper that presents an overview of the current issues. Don’t worry, the research has been done and the paper has been written. Follow instructions beginning on next page to demonstrate your ability to format a research paper using MLA style.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Open a new Word document.
- Modify the Normal style to 12 -point Times New Roman font. ( Hint : Remember that just changing the font in the document will not modify the Normal style .) Adjust line spacing to double. When your research paper is complete, the entire paper should be double-spaced.
- Remove space below (after) paragraphs. When your research paper is complete, the entire paper should have 0 pt spacing below (after) paragraphs.
- Create a right-aligned header that includes the your last name followed by a space, and then the page number. ( Hint: Use the Current Position command on the Insert Page Number menu to add a Plain Number page number from the Current Position gallery.)
- Begin the research paper by typing YOUR name , the teacher Mrs Snyders , the class Computer Apps , the current date , and the title Major City Recycling Initiatives , each on a new line as shown in Figure 1. Center the title as shown in Figure 1.

- Edit the Bloom citation in the second body paragraph to display pages 15-20 at the end of the citation. Do not insert a space before or after the hyphen in the page number reference.
- Type the third body paragraph of the research paper by entering the text shown in Figure 6.
FIGURE 6 Text to enter for third body paragraph
- At the end of the third sentence in the third body paragraph after the phrase “three billion units per year” (and before the period), type a space, and then insert a citation by adding a new source, the Chang bibliographical source shown in Figure 7.

- Type the fourth body paragraph of the research paper by entering the text shown in Figure 9.
FIGURE 9 Text to enter for fourth body paragraph
- After the fourth body paragraph, press the ENTER key and then insert a manual page break to begin a new page. Enter the text Works Cited and center that text. Rather than typing the sources, use the Insert Bibliography command in the Bibliography gallery to insert the list of sources. Convert the bibliography field to regular text ( Hint: Use CTRL+SHIFT+F9).
- Change the line spacing for the bibliography sources to double. Change the format of the source titles from underline to italics (to update the MLA Sixth Edition style to match the latest guidelines for MLA Seventh Edition documentation). Enter the media type Print at the end of the Bloom and Chang sources, and enter the media type Web to the Conner source before the “28 May 2012” date (again to match the new MLA documentation style). Your bibliography should look like Figure 10.
