please attach additional sheets of paper.
1. Find the net torque on the wheel shown below about the axle through O if a=10cm and
b=25cm.
(Hints: One of the quantities given in the figure is not needed. Pay attention to relative
signs of torques from individual forces).
2. Assume that the wheel in the previous problem consists of two solid and uniform
cylinders fused together by sides. The smaller cylinder (with radius a) has a mass of 2
kg. The larger cylinder (with radius b) has a mass of 5 kg. Find angular acceleration of
the wheel.
(Hints: Figure out moment of inertia of the wheel and use Newton’s 2nd law in angular
form)

Physics 211 Spring 2009 Syracuse University Homework Problem Set 11 p.

  1. A uniform, solid disk of radius R=0.3m and mass m=4kg is free to rotate on a frictionless pivot through a point on its rim (see below). If the disk is released from rest in the position shown by the solid circle, what is the speed of its center of mass when the disk reaches the position indicated by the dashed circle? (Assume g=10 m/s^2 )

Hint: Approach this problem as rotation of a rigid body. Use conservation of mechanical energy to figure out angular speed of the disk in the dashed position. Use the relation between linear and angular speeds to find the answer.

  1. (a) What is the angular acceleration of the disk in the previous problem in its initial position?

(b) What is the angular acceleration of the disk in its final (dashed) position?
