Q1. While the terms ‘group’ and ‘team’ are often used interchangeably, there are substantial
differences between them. Explain the differences between these terms, making
reference to the various types of groups and teams that may exist, and discuss, with the
use of company examples, the contribution that teams can make to an organisation. (25

Q2. Discuss five challenges facing managers in organisations today. (25 Marks)
Q3. (a) Compare and contrast three need theories of motivation. (15 Marks)
(b) Discuss the early perspectives on motivation that eventually led to the development of
the need theories. (10 Marks)
Q4. (a) Decision-making may be defined as ‘the process of generating and evaluating
alternatives and making choices between those alternatives’ (Mondy and Premeaux,
1993). Discuss. (18 Marks)
(b) Differentiate between programmed and nonprogrammed decisions. What are the
implications of these differences for decision-makers? (7 Marks)

building blocks of organisation design: designing jobs, grouping jobs through
departmentalisation, establishing reporting relationships, and distributing authority.
